New Auburn Man Gets 3 Years in Federal Prison for Possessing Child P*rn

Robert Shilts, 30, New Auburn, Wis., was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge William Conley to 36 months in federal prison for possessing child pornography.  This prison term will be followed by 15 years of supervised release.  Shilts pleaded guilty to this charge on February 9, 2017.

Shilts used Kik messenger to communicate with an undercover officer and post images of child pornography.  While Judge Conley recognized that the defendant had a supportive family and had some mental and physical challenges, he was also concerned that the defendant’s family enabled some of his conduct and that his challenges could possibly make him more dangerous.

The charges against Shilts were the result of an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations; the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation; Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office; and Eau Claire Police Department.  The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.
