Washburn Co. Sheriff's Office Adds Two Armored Humvees to Fleet; Announces Raffle

In light of recent events where officers nationwide have been shot and killed in the performance of their duties, Washburn County Sheriff, Terry Dryden, took the opportunity through the Federal Surplus Program to apply for two up-armored High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) from the Federal Government.

After a lengthy justification process, the Sheriff’s request was approved several months ago. Both of these M1114 up-armored HMMWV’s have been delivered to the county.

One is a 2003 with 524 miles and the second is a 2004 with 579 miles. These vehicles were initially purchased for the military at a cost of $192,000 each. However, other than the cost of transportation, they were given to the Washburn County Sheriff's Office for free.

They are currently being housed in the County’s Highway Maintenance building, where the gun mounts and shields have been removed and will be returned to the federal government. They will be painted black and the proper decals will be put on, along with the emergency lights that are required so they can be operated on the roadways.

The Special Response Team (SRT) along with additional Sheriff’s Office staff will assist with the sanding and prep work and C&J Body Shop in Spooner has graciously consented to donate their labor to paint the vehicles with paint that has been donated by Single Source, Baldwin WI.

When ready, these vehicles will be used on high-risk calls such as barricaded suspects, hostage incidents and high-risk search warrants where the Special Response Team needs additional protection in addition to their personal body armor. These vehicles will also aid in search and rescue operations, flooding, or where the terrain prohibits other emergency vehicles from navigating.

We welcome the public to support the continued use of these vehicles by joining our Raffle. Cash prizes to the winners; $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place, $1,000 for third place and $500 for fourth. Raffle Tickets are available starting today!!!

Only 200 tickets will be sold and they are $100 each.

Proceeds from the Raffle will be used to pay the expense of transportation, current maintenance needs and equipping the Armored HMMWV’s with radios and equipment.

All the money will be submitted to the Washburn County Treasurer’s Office and all prizes will be paid by check from the same office insuring that all of the finances involved in this contest will be subject to audit.

If you would like to be involved in this worthy project to help serve and protect the citizens of Washburn County, make your check payable to the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office, memo line to read, Hummer Project.
