SAWYER COUNTY -- Hayward, WI man Alex Clute, age 18, is facing felony charges after Sawyer County law enforcement received a report on October 27, 2018, regarding a possible sexual assault.
The criminal complaint filed against Clute states that Sawyer County Dispatch received a call at around 4a on October 27, 2018, requesting the assistance of law enforcement. When deputies responded, they spoke with the caller, who stated that he had awoken shortly before 4a and realized that a 13-year-old female was missing from the residence.
The caller went on to tell deputies that the 13-year-old had answered her cell phone after a few calls and said that she was walking down the road, looking for the dog. The caller drove down the road, found the girl and also saw a vehicle travelling toward the Village of Winter, WI.
The caller was able to stop the vehicle by pulling in front of it and stopping. The caller told law enforcement that he found a nude male inside the vehicle who started apologizing and requested that the police not be called as this “would ruin his life”. The criminal complaint goes on to say that the male also kept asking how old the female was and saying that nothing had happened.
The male was identified as Alex Clute. When speaking with law enforcement, Clute stated that he had known the female for “a long time”. He went on to say that on that night, the female had contacted him via Snapchat, and asked what he was doing, and if he wanted to hang out.
Deputies asked Clute what had happened inside the vehicle on the night of the incident, and Clute allegedly admitted to the deputies that he had engaged in sexual activity with the female, however, Clute said that they had not had intercourse.
When the deputies told Clute that the female was 13-years-old, the criminal complaint states that Clute got a shocked look on his face, said “13 years old?”, and began to cry. Clute told the deputies that he did not know how old the female was.
Online circuit court records show that Clute was placed on a $2,500 cash bail bond at a hearing on October 29, 2018, with conditions that he have no contact with juveniles including the juvenile female, and that he is scheduled to appear again later this month.
Pursuant to the direction of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, as found in Supreme Court Rule 20:3.6, Trial Publicly, you are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
