2-Vehicle Fatal Crash In Polk County

POLK COUNTY — Authorities in Polk County responded to a 911 call reporting a two-vehicle crash in the Town of Apple River today, October 8th, 2020.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at 11:36a this morning at the intersection of Mains Crossing Avenue and 70th Street. It was determined that at least two occupants were injured in the accident.

A Mazda SUV was traveling northbound on 70th Street when it failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a Chrysler minivan which was traveling eastbound on Mains Crossing Avenue, according to authorities.

The Sheriff’s Office says that the female passenger of the minivan succumbed to her injuries on the scene and the male driver of the Chrysler sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Regions Hospital where he remains in critical condition. The lone female occupant of the Mazda sustained possible injuries.

Inattentive driving by the operator of the Mazda is believed to be a contributing factor in this accident, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Assisting agencies were the Apple River Fire Department and First Responders, Amery Area Ambulance, Life Link air ambulance service, and the Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities are still investigating the crash and are not releasing the names of the individuals involved.
