The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is providing a weekly update on construction projects in the northwest region, which includes the counties of Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer, St. Croix, Taylor, Trempealeau and Washburn counties.
Construction related traffic impacts are subject to change and dependent on favorable weather patterns.
Region
Highway: WIS 124, US 12, WIS 13, WIS 102, US 53, WIS 25, WIS 35, I-94, WIS 65
- Location: Chippewa, Trempealeau, Buffalo, Pierce, Jackson, St. Croix and Taylor Counties
- Schedule: July 9– October 26, 2018
- Cost: $1.4 Million
- Description: Northwest Region Pavement Marking Project
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect a moving single lane closure for pavement marking on various highways
Ashland County
Highway: WIS 13
- Location: Ashland, Golf Course Road – Butterworth Road
- Schedule: June 6 - August 31, 2018
- Cost: $5.5 Million
Description: There will be installing of utilities, road paving, as well as insertion of rumble strips.
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter daytime lane closures with a flagging operation.
Highway: WIS 13
- Location: Park Falls, South County Line to Morse Road
- Schedule: July 12 - August 17, 2018
- Cost: $640,000
Description: Scrub seal and fog seal, sign replacement, and paving marking
Traffic impacts: Project postponed for 2-3 weeks starting July 19. Once work resumes motorists can expect to encounter daily single lane closures. Traffic will 2 lanes during night hours.
Highway: Sinkhole Road
- Location: Town of Peeksville
- Schedule: July 23 -September 15, 2018
- Cost: $400,000
Description: Bridge replacement with temporary structure
Traffic impacts: There will be no significant traffic impacts
Barron County
Highway: East South Street / Kern Avenue
- Location: City of Rice Lake
- Schedule: May 29 - October 25, 2018
- Cost: $2.7 Million
Description: Excavation and paving of roads as well as sewer replacements.
Traffic Impacts: East South Street is closed from County Highway SS to Main Street, between Carrie Avenue and Manwarning Avenue. Access to businesses is maintained.
Highway: US 53
- Location: County Highway SS Bridge NB, Town of Haugen
- Schedule: June 4 – August 24, 2018
- Cost: $410,000
Description: County Highway SS Bridge Maintenance
Traffic impacts: North bound traffic reduced to one lane at structure.
Highway: WIS 48
- Location: Town of Rice Lake
- Schedule: July 16 – October 12, 2018
- Cost: $1.2 Million
Description: Realignment of stream and structure replacement
Traffic impacts: Road closed between County Highway V and Seventeenth Street. Detour routes are marked. Local residents can still access the roadway.
Highway: WIS 48, Knapp Street
- Location: Town of Rice Lake
- Schedule: July 16 – October 12, 2018
- Cost: $2.1 Million
Description: reconstruction, resurface and utility work
Traffic impacts: Traffic is bi-directional on the westbound lanes.
Highway: US 8
- Location: Town of Cameron
- Schedule: June 5 –August 31, 2018
- Cost: $1.7 Million
Description: Chip and Reseal project
Traffic impacts: Roadway will remain open and a flagging operation will cause minor delays
Bayfield County
Highway: US 2
- Location: Iron River
- Schedule: April 9 – August 31, 2018
- Cost: $1.5 Million
Description: Replacement of the US 2 Iron River Bridge
Traffic Impact: Traffic will be reduced to a single lane with signals.
Highway: US 2
- Location: Town of Ino
- Schedule: June 25 – August 31, 2018
- Cost: $2 Million
Description: Replacement of a flood damaged culvert with a new bridge.
Traffic Impact: Detour provided utilizing County Highway G.
Buffalo County
Highway: WIS 37
- Location: Alma one mile north of junction with County Highway S
- Schedule: July 11–August 15, 2018
- Cost: $230,000
Description: Moving and placing dirt and other materials to fix elevation and overall condition of roadway
Traffic Impact: Work will be performed off roadway, motorists can expect an increase in truck traffic on WIS 37.
Burnett County
Highway: WIS 35
- Location: Between Frederic and Siren
- Schedule: May 29 – August 15, 2018
- Cost: $3.8 Million
Description: Mill and overlay, guardrail replacement, culvert rehabilitations, and construction of a right turn lane at the WIS 35/County Highway E intersection
Traffic Impact: Motorists can expect to encounter a moving flagging operation for asphalt paving.
Chippewa County
Highway: WIS 124 and WIS 64
- Location: Town of Eagle Point, O’Neil Creek bridges
- Schedule: March 29 – July 10, 2018
- Cost: $1.1 Million
Description: Bridge deck replacements and concrete pavement approach work for four bridges crossing O’Neil Creek near the Town of Eagle Point.
Traffic Impact:
- WIS 64 at the O’Neil Creek Bridge (1 mile east of WIS 124) is reduced to a single lane with the use of temporary traffic signals. Width restriction signing has been installed in advance of the structure.
- WIS 124 is closed for the re-deck construction of the O’Neil Creek Bridge (2.6 miles south of WIS 64). Detour via County Highway S, US 53, and WIS 64.
Highway: WIS 124
- Location: Chippewa Falls, Bridge Street bridges
- Schedule: April 2017 – July 2018
- Cost: $3.7 Million
Description: Improvements include removing deteriorated concrete pavement, resurfacing the Summit Avenue intersection with an asphaltic surface, bridge deck repairs and a polymer overlay. The project will also include improvements to curb and gutter, beam guard, signing and pavement marking.
Traffic Impact: Outside lanes between the North and South roundabouts are closed. Right turn lanes from and to Summit Ave. are closed to traffic during nightly closure hours of 7 PM to 11 AM. Speed limit reduced from 35 MPH to 25 MPH. The sidewalk is closed on the NB bridge due to polymer overlay operations.
Highway: County Highway K
- Location: Cadott
- Schedule: August 6 – October 2018
- Cost: $425,000
Description: Bridge replacement
Traffic impacts: CTH K will be closed just south of the 107th street intersection.
Highway: WIS 29 – US 53
Chippewa Falls – Thorp (CTH X & 50th Ave)
Chippewa Falls – Rice Lake (Bus. 29, CTH S, CTH M, CTH O & Structure C-09-0021)
- Schedule: June 12 – August 31, 2018
- Cost: $2.5 Million
- Description: resurfacing of on and off ramps
Traffic impacts: All ramps will be open.
Clark County
Highway: County Highway K
- Location: Village of Granton
- Schedule: July 16, 2017 –September 17, 2018
- Cost: $500,000
Description: Resurfacing of roadway and placing guardrails.
Traffic Impact: County Highway K will be closed from Hill Street to Timber Lane Road. Pelsdorf Avenue will also be closed from CTH K to Fremont Road.
Douglas County
Highway: US 2
- Location: Belknap Street, City of Superior; Banks Avenue to Hill Avenue
- Schedule: March 19 – October 3, 2018
- Cost: $23 Million
Description: Belknap Street (US 2) will be reconstructed from Banks Avenue to Hill Avenue over two constructions seasons. Work completed in 2017 included the west and east ends of the project from Banks Avenue to John Avenue and Birch Avenue to Hill Avenue respectively. The center section from John Avenue to Birch Avenue will be reconstructed in 2018.

- US 2/Belknap Street - Single lane closures from Mortorelli Avenue to Ogden Avenue.

Description: Milling asphalt, hot mix asphalt overlay, guardrail replacements, new bridge deck at Miller Creek.
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures.
Highway: WIS 35
- Location: SLC to Junction with County Highway B
- Schedule: July 16 – September 28, 2018
- Cost: $7.7 Million
Description: Paving and marking the road, in addition to 4 culvert replacements.
Traffic impacts: Intermittent one lane traffic controlled by a flagging operation.
Dunn County
Highway: US 12
- Location: City of Menomonie, Broadway Street (Red Cedar River Bridge)
- Schedule: April 30 – August 31, 2018
- Cost: $1.5 Million
Description: This project will consist of deck repairs, expansion joint replacement, bridge painting, pier repairs, crash cushion replacement, street lighting and epoxy overlay.
Traffic impacts: US 12 traffic will be moved to the outside lanes while the median crossovers are built. Once the median is completed, all US 12 traffic will be placed on the westbound structure and travel bi-directionally in single lanes for most of the project.
Highway: I-94
- Location: 250th Street to Wilson Creek, Menomonie
- Schedule: April 2 – November 15, 2018
- Cost: $30 Million
Description: Improvements include removing and replacing deteriorated concrete pavement, removing and replacing 8 structures, associated grading, pavement marking, signing, right of way fencing, beam guard, cable barrier, and incidentals.
Traffic impacts:
Currently EB and WB single lane closures are being set daily for grading and base placement. Lanes will all be open during peak traffic hours. Speed limit is reduced to 60 MPH at all times.
The next switch to stage 3, where EB traffic will be running on the temporary roadway, is scheduled between Saturday August 4 and Tuesday August 7.
The EB Median shoulder will be closed this week after median barrier wall is removed and installed on the temp roadway.
Highway: US 12
- Location: Altoona to Fall Creek
- Schedule: June 5 - August 31, 2018
- Cost: $1.7 million
Description: Maintenance project to include chip Seal, scrub seal and fog seal operations.
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures with a flagging operation.
Eau Claire County
Highway: I-94
- Location: Osseo, Hobbs Road Bridge and County Highway I Bridge
- Schedule: April 30 – November 9, 2018
- Cost: $3.9 Million
Description: Replacement of County I and Hobbs Road bridges
Traffic impacts: County I bridge will be closed to through traffic throughout project duration with access provided for adjacent landowners. Hobbs Rd Bridge will remain open to traffic until County Highway I Bridge is complete.
Expect single lane closures periodically throughout project duration along I-94 in each direction.
- WB: Monday, August 6 at 5:00 p.m. – Thursday, August 9th at 11:00 a.m.
- EB: Monday, August 6 at 4:00 p.m. – Thursday, August 9th at 11:00 a.m.
Highway: WIS 37
- Location: Mondovi
- Schedule: May 14 – November 2018
- Cost: $4.5 Million
Description: Concrete removal and replacement along WIS 37
Traffic impacts: Traffic is currently single lane traffic on the outside lanes of STH 37 NB and SB. Short St. and Craig Rd. are both slid to single lanes on the left sides. Plan to switch to single lane two-way traffic on WIS 37 SB on Wednesday, August 8.
Jackson County
Highway: WIS 95
- Location: Village of Hixton, Trempealeau River Bridge
- Schedule: April 25 – September 24, 2018
- Cost: $1.6 Million
Description: Bridge replacement
Traffic impacts: Traffic will be maintained via temporary structure. Width restrictions will be posted for a 13’ maximum lane width, effective May 21 to September 11, 2018.
Pierce County
Highway: County Highway U
- Location: Plum City, Valley Creek Bridge
- Schedule: June 14 - August 31, 2018
- Cost: $525,000
Description: Asbestos removal, erosion control, bridge demolition and rebuilding.
Traffic Impacts: County Highway U will be closed. Detour via County Highway S, County Highway CC, and County Highway U.
Highway: County Highway M
- Location: River Falls to intersection with County Highway F
- Schedule: July 9 - September 14, 2018
- Cost: $1.8 Million
Description: Paving, Marking, and Culvert replacement
Traffic Impacts: Intermittent flagging operations will be utilized for traffic control
Polk/Burnett County
Highway: WIS 35
- Location: Polk Street to Bacon Street, Luck – Siren
- Schedule: May 29– August 15, 2018
- Cost: $3.8 Million
Description: Asphalt resurfacing project with mill & overlay, guardrail improvements, culvert rehabilitations, construction of right turn lane along WIS 35 NB at County Highway E, shouldering, signing, and pavement marking.
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations.
Rusk County
Highway: US 8
- Location: Town of Weyerhaeuser
- Schedule: July 16 – October 19, 2018
- Cost: $1.2 Million
Description: Replacement of the Weyerhaeuser Creek Bridge
Traffic impacts: The WB lane of US 8 is closed at the structure. Traffic is still two way and will alternate and the structure with the use of a flagging operation.
St. Croix County
Highway: I-94
- Location: Hudson – Baldwin, US 12 to WIS 65
- Schedule: April 12 – August 1, 2018
- Cost: $4.5 Million
Description: Concrete repair, mill and overlay resurface, beamguard and signing.
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter nighttime single lane closures. Speed limit will be reduced to 55 MPH.
Highway: I-94
- Location: WIS 35 – US 12, Hudson
- Schedule: March 28 – November 14, 2018
- Cost: $28 Million
Description: Upgrading and replacing deteriorating sections of roadway and shoulders, two bridge decks over Front Street, concrete barrier walls, signs and sign structures, widening a bridge deck over WIS 35 N, and adding two noise walls and three retaining walls.
Traffic impacts: A section of I-94 WB and EB from the Wisconsin/Minnesota border to US 12 will have nighttime single lane and double lane closures.
- A section of I-94 WB and EB from the Wisconsin/Minnesota border to WIS 35 S will have nighttime single lane closures.
- Throughout the week various ramps will be closed with detours posted for each ramp.
- WIS 35N SB to I-94 EB on-ramp & 14TH Street on-ramp will be closed until mid-October. Detours will be posted for both.
- I-94 WB from Mile Maker 5 to WI/MN border, and on I-94 EB from WI/MN border to WIS 35S the speed will be reduced from 70 MPH to 60 MPH. WIS 35S speed will be reduced from 65 MPH to 55 MPH
Highway: WIS 64 (Loop Trail)
- Location: Stillwater – Somerset, Loop Trail System (Ped/Bike Facility), Houlton, WI
- Schedule: April 23 – October 26, 2018
- Cost: Approximately $4.7 Million
Description: Base Aggregate and Prep for Asphalt
Traffic impacts: Narrow Lanes on local roads – The travel lanes of Houlton School Circle and Main Street are narrower than 12 feet. The lanes are designated on one side by a sawcut and drums.
Local Road Detour – Detour Has ENDED! Vehicles are using the new Hilltop Drive alignment, driving on gravel.
Trempealeau County
Highway: WIS 93
- Location: between Arcadia and Independence
- Schedule: May 7 – September 28, 2018
- Cost: $4 Million
Description: Removal of two inches of existing asphalt surface followed by an asphalt overlay on the entirety of WIS 93. The project will also replace existing cross culvert pipes, intersection improvements including the addition of right turn lanes at Loesel Lane and County Highway XX, guard rail updates and safety improvements such as ground in rumble strips and widening of the asphalt shoulder. The project will also include widening of the existing roadway at the southern limits of the city of Independence to better accommodate turning vehicles.
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures with the use of a flagging operation.
Highway: Lyga Valley Road
- Location: Township of Burnside
- Schedule: July 16 – September 14, 2018
- Cost: $300,000
Description: Resurfacing the asphalt on the roadway
Traffic impacts: Lyga Valley Road will remain open to traffic.
Washburn County/Douglas County
Highway: US 53
- Location: Minong to Solon Springs
- Schedule: May 7 – August 21, 2018
- Cost: $2 Million
Description: Grading turn lanes and 4 miles of resurfacing
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect single lane closures on the US 53 northbound.
