Weekly Regional Construction Update For Northwest Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) provides weekly updates on road construction projects in the following counties in northwest Wisconsin: Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk, St. Croix, Sawyer, Taylor, Trempealeau and Washburn counties. Schedules are dependent on weather and subject to change.

Northwest Region Pavement Marking Project

This project will take place in various counties at various locations. This excerpt will be updated weekly with the locations that are expected to be impacted in the following week.

Highway and location: No work anticipated in the next week.

  • Schedule: May 11 to October
  • Cost: $1.69 million.
  • Description: Marking pavement.
  • Traffic impacts None presently.

Ashland County

Highway: WIS 13

  • Location: Between Park Falls and Mellen
  • Schedule: May 26 to October
  • Cost: $3.49 million
  • Description: Replacing and lining culverts between Morse Road in the town of Morse and Jefferson Avenue in Mellen and overlaying the deck over the railroad tracks and Bad River northwest of Morse Road.
  • Traffic impacts:
    • WIS 13 is open to through traffic, but the road is down to one lane at work zones during daylight hours.
      • WIS 13 is fully open on weekends.
    • Traffic signals are being used to direct traffic at pipe replacement and grading sites.
    • Flagging operations will direct traffic across the Black River Bridge when guardrail is installed.

Highway: Pieper Road

  • Location: East fork of the Chippewa River Bridge, southwest of Glidden in the town of Shanagolden
  • Schedule: Aug. 26 to October
  • Cost: $445,000 million
  • Description: Removing and replacing bridge.
  • Traffic impacts: Pieper Road is closed at the structure.

Barron County

Highway: US 8

  • Location: 20th Street and County SS intersections, village of Cameron
  • Schedule: Sept. 21 to late October
  • Cost: $618,057
  • Description: At 20th Street: Building right-turn lanes on 20th Street in both the east- and westbound direction and removing the existing median crossing and installing U-turns in both the east- and westbound direction. At County SS: Installing street lighting and an overhead stop sign with a flashing beacon and building new curb and gutter islands and medians.
  • Traffic impacts: There are single-lane closures on east- and westbound US 8.

Highway: WIS 48

  • Location: Between West and Bear Paw avenues, city of Rice Lake
  • Schedule: April 20 to November
  • Cost: $5.1 million
  • Description: Reconstructing WIS 48 from West Avenue to Bear Paw Avenue, rebuilding the WIS 48-West Avenue intersection with a roundabout, reconstructing the north- and southbound US 53 ramp terminals as roundabouts and improving the Bear Paw Avenue intersection with traffic signal installation.
  • Traffic impacts:
    • There is a 12-foot width restriction on WIS 48.
    • The Bear Paw Avenue intersection north of WIS 48 is closed.
    • The West Avenue intersection south of WIS 48 is closed, and it will remain closed until late September.

Bayfield County

Highway: US 63

  • Location: South Fish Creek Bridge, just south of US 2 in the towns of Keystone and Eileen
  • Schedule: June 26 to October
  • Cost: $1.95 million
  • Description: Removing and replacing the bridge.
  • Traffic impacts: US 63 just south of US 2 and north of County F is closed.
    • Detour:
      • Passenger vehicles: County F
      • Trucks: WIS 118, WIS 112 and US 2

Highway: US 2

  • Location: County E to US 63
  • Schedule: June to September
  • Cost: $696,000
  • Description: Rehabilitating and replacing culvert pipe, replacing the asphalt road surface and marking the pavement.
  • Traffic impacts: Motorists should expect shoulder closures and less than 12-foot width restrictions during working hours.

Highway: WIS 13

  • Location: Bono Creek south of the city of Washburn
  • Schedule: Aug. 31 to October
  • Cost: $487,922
  • Description: Rehabilitating three culverts.
  • Traffic impacts: Motorists should expect periodic flagging operations on southbound WIS 13.

Highway: WIS 13

  • Location: Boyd Creek Bridge, about two miles north of the US 2/WIS 13 northbound connection at roundabout
  • Schedule: May 11 to September
  • Cost: $1.95 million
  • Description: Removing and replacing the bridge.
  • Traffic impacts: None; project complete.

Highway: Little Sand Bay Road and Old County K

  • Location: Little Sand Bay Road from Old County K to termini and Old County K from Little Sand Bay Road to Peterson Hill Road and from Peterson Hill Road to Leask Drive.
  • Schedule: June 8 to September
  • Cost: $1.79 million
  • Description: Grading, pulverizing existing pavement and relaying it as base, hot-mix asphalt paving, culvert lining, marking pavement and signing.
  • Traffic impacts: On Little Sand Bay Road from Old County K to the termini:
    • Traffic is restricted to a single lane utilizing flagging operations from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and possibly some Saturdays within the construction zone.
    • During those times and days, a 10-foot lane width will be maintained on Little Sand Bay Road. Such restrictions could be up to a mile in length.
    • The road will be open to two-way traffic during nighttime hours, on Saturdays when no work is planned and on Sundays.
    • The east leg of Old County K is closed to through traffic from WIS 13 to the junction of Little Sand Bay Road.
      • Detour: WIS 13 north to west leg of Old County K to Little Sand Bay Road.

Buffalo and Trempealeau counties

Highway: WIS 121

  • Location: WIS 88 to WIS 93, Gilmanton to Independence
  • Schedule: June 29 to October
  • Cost: $5.17 million
  • Description: Resurfacing the highway, replacing culvert pipes and guardrail and cleaning ditches
  • Traffic impacts:
    • Flagging operations are in place to control traffic during daylight hours.
    • Traffic is limited to one lane where milling and paving is taking place.

Chippewa County

Highway: US 53

  • Location: WIS 64 to north county line
  • Schedule: July 27 to October
  • Cost: $6.03 million
  • Description: Milling and overlaying the pavement and completing curb and gutter work.
  • Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect single-lane closures both north and south for the duration of the work.

Highway: WIS 27

  • Location: Between 100th Avenue north of Cadott and South Street in Cornell
  • Schedule: June 29 to November
  • Cost: $1.5 million
  • Description: Replacing box culverts at Seth Creek, Leman Creek, an unnamed creek and Clark Creek.
  • Traffic impacts:
    • WIS 27 is closed at an unnamed tributary just south of Cornell.
      • Detour: WIS 29, WIS 178 and WIS 64.
    • Work is expected to move north to Clark Creek in Cornell on Friday, Oct. 2 or Monday, Oct. 5.

Chippewa, Clark and Eau Claire counties

Highway: WIS 29 and US 53

  • Location: Various
  • Schedule: July 13 to September
  • Cost: $661,344
  • Description: Install median cable guard.
  • Traffic impacts: None; project complete.

Clark County

Highway: WIS 98

  • Location: Branch Rock Creek
  • Schedule: Sept. 8 to October
  • Cost: $418,750
  • Description: Replacing box culvert.
  • Traffic impacts: There are single-lane closures controlled by temporary signals.

Highway: Pray Avenue

  • Location: Cunningham Creek Bridge, town of Washburn
  • Schedule: July 20 to September
  • Cost: $390,971
  • Description: Replacing bridge.
  • Traffic impacts: None; project complete.

Highway: Riplinger Road

  • Location: Popple River Bridge, town of Unity
  • Schedule: Aug. 7 to September
  • Cost: $336,748
  • Description: Replacing bridge.
  • Traffic impacts: Riplinger Road is closed within the project limits

Douglas County

Highway: US 2/53 (East 2nd Street)

  • Location: Between 2nd Avenue East and 31st Avenue East, city of Superior
  • Schedule: April 6 to October
  • Cost: $7.02 million
  • Description: Rehabilitating one bridge structure; repairing spot locations of concrete pavement and utility manholes and inlets; updating or replacing traffic signals; upgrading or installing curb ramps at pedestrian crossings; and grinding the road’s concrete surface and overlaying it with asphalt.
  • Traffic impacts: None presently.

Highway: WIS 105

  • Location: Pokegama River Bridge, west of WIS 35 in Superior
  • Schedule: June 10 to September
  • Cost: $2.1 million
  • Description: Removing and replacing the structure.
  • Traffic impacts: The south shoulder is closed.

Highway: WIS 35 (Tower Avenue)

  • Location: North 64th Street to North 69th Street, village of Superior
  • Schedule: Aug. 31 to October
  • Cost: $692,109
  • Description: Resurfacing Tower Avenue; making spot curb, gutter, sidewalk and select storm sewer inlet repairs; and installing or upgrading curb ramps.
  • Traffic impacts: The shoulders around areas of curb and gutter removal are closed.

Dunn County

Highway: I-94

  • Location: 250th Street to Wilson Creek, west of Menomonie
  • Schedule: Spring 2018 to fall
  • Cost: $30.34 million
  • Description: Replacing bridges, resurfacing I-94, marking pavement and installing median cable barrier, guardrail, right of way fence and signs.
  • Traffic impacts: Intermittent flagging might occur on County K.

Highway: US 12/WIS 29

  • Location: County B to I-94 east of Menomonie
  • Schedule: Aug. 25 to Oct. 15
  • Cost: $3.1 million
  • Description: Replacing culvert pipe and guardrail, resurfacing the road and marking the pavement.
  • Traffic impacts: US 12 is open to traffic, and flagging operations will direct motorists around paving work.

Highway: WIS 25

  • Location: South Dunn County line to Red Cedar River near Downsville.
  • Schedule: Aug. 3 to November
  • Cost: $3.6 million
  • Description: Resurfacing, relocating a curve and replacing culvert pipes.
  • Traffic impacts: Single-lane closures are being controlled by flagging operations.

Dunn and St. Croix counties

Highway: I-94

  • Location: Between Hudson and Menomonie near Knapp
  • Schedule: March 25, 2019 to November 2020
  • Cost: $57.5 million
  • Description: Removing and replacing concrete pavement and six structures, grading, marking pavement and installing beam guard, cable barrier, right-of-way fencing and signing.
  • Traffic impacts:
    • There will be intermittent lane closures on east- and westbound I-94 from WIS 128 to 250th Street.
    • Traffic is split in a 3-1 configuration in the Knapp Hill area.
      • The westbound side of I-94 is carrying the westbound driving and passing lanes and eastbound passing lane.
      • The eastbound side of I-94 is carrying the eastbound driving lane.
        • Trucks are being directed to stay in this lane.

Eau Claire County

Highway: US 12

  • Location: Elco Road to Oak Knoll Road, between Altoona and Fall Creek
  • Schedule: June 1 to September
  • Cost: $1.28 million
  • Description: Removing and replacing box culverts over Six Mile Creek near Elco Road and Nine Mile Creek near Voight Road and rebuilding roadway approaches to accommodate new culverts.
  • Traffic impacts: None; project complete.

Jackson County

Highway: US 12/WIS 27

  • Location: Northeast of Black River Falls.
  • Schedule: June 8 to November
  • Cost: $2.68 million
  • Description: Removing the existing Allen Creek stone masonry culvert and replacing it with a bridge and removing another culvert south of Allen Creek and replacing it with a culvert.
  • Traffic impacts: US 12/WIS 27 is closed to traffic in the Allen Creek work zone.
    • Detour: I-94, WIS 95 and US 12/WIS 27.

Pierce County

Highway: East Division Street (County M)

  • Location: Kinnickinnic River Bridge, city of River Falls
  • Schedule: Aug. 10 to October
  • Cost: $361,557
  • Description: Rehabilitating bridge, replacing guardrail and marking pavement.
  • Traffic impacts: The northbound shoulder is closed, but a traffic switch is expected early next week, which will include closing the WIS 35 westerb shoulder.

Highway: 465th Avenue

  • Location: Rush River Bridge, town of El Paso
  • Schedule: Aug. 10 to October
  • Cost: $684,498
  • Description: Removing and replacing bridge.
  • Traffic impacts: 465th Avenue is closed from 400th Street to 350th Street.

Rusk County

Highway: WIS 73

  • Location: Alder Creek Bridge, north of Jump River
  • Schedule: Sept. 21 to November
  • Cost: $473,476
  • Description: Removing the triple culvert structure, replacing it with a bridge, paving WIS 73 with asphalt north and south of the new structure and adding guardrail, pavement marking and signs.
  • Traffic impacts: WIS 73 is closed at the project site.
    • Detour: WIS 64, WIS 27, US 8 and WIS 73.

Highway: County B

  • Location: Deer Tail Creek Bridge, north of Glen Flora
  • Schedule: Aug. 19 to October
  • Cost: $286,365
  • Description: Removing and replacing bridge.
  • Traffic impacts: County B is closed at the project site.

Highway: County D

  • Location: Deer Tail Creek Bridge, west of WIS 27
  • Schedule: July 6 to October
  • Cost: $1.36 million
  • Description: Removing and replacing bridge, base, asphaltic surface and guardrail.
  • Traffic impacts: County D is closed at the project site.

Highway: South Hutchinson Road, town of Stubbs

  • Location: Soft Maple Creek Bridge
  • Schedule: July 13 to September
  • Cost: $380,611
  • Description: Removing and replacing bridge, replacing base and asphaltic surface and grading.
  • Traffic impacts: None; project complete.

St. Croix County

Highway: I-94

  • Location: Kinnickinnic River to County T
  • Schedule: July 6 to October
  • Cost: $5.04 million
  • Description: Resurfacing, grading slopes and pipe lining.
  • Traffic impacts: None; project complete.

Highway: US 12

  • Location: Between US 63 and WIS 128, east of Baldwin
  • Schedule: April 27 to October 2020 and June 2021
  • Cost: $6.2 million
  • Description: Resurfacing US 12, making repairs to the bridge over the Union Pacific railroad tracks and safety improvements to shoulders, improving curb, gutter, culvert pipes and beam guard, signing and marking.
  • Traffic impacts: There are single-lane closures controlled by flagging where work is happening.

Highway: WIS 35/65

  • Location: City of River Falls
  • Schedule: Aug. 19 to October
  • Cost: $1.86 million
  • Description: Constructing a jug-handle connection in the northwest quadrant of the WIS 35/65-East Division Street intersection, aligning it with the existing jug-handle in the northeast quadrant.
  • Traffic impacts: WIS 35/65, East Division Street and Hanson Drive will remain open to traffic throughout construction. During the first stage of construction:
    • There is a shoulder closure on the west side of WIS 35/65 southbound.
    • A temporary bypass is in use on Hanson Drive to maintain access.

Taylor County

Highway: WIS 64/73

  • Location: Hay Creek Bridge southwest of Gilman
  • Schedule: Aug. 27 to November
  • Cost: $593,100
  • Description: Removing and replacing the bridge, placing new concrete approaches, paving WIS 64/73 around the construction site with asphalt and installing new guardrail.
  • Traffic impacts: WIS 64/73 is closed at the structure, and traffic is being detoured on County B.

Trempealeau County

Highway: I-94

  • Location: Northwest of Osseo
  • Schedule: March 25, 2019 to October 2020
  • Cost: $10.02 million
  • Description: Removing and replacing four structures – two over County NN and two over the Buffalo River, road resurfacing, installing beam guard, pavement marking, fencing and signing.
  • Traffic impacts:
    • Eastbound I-94:
      • There are single-lane closures from 5 a.m. Mondays through 10 a.m. Fridays.
    • Westbound I-94:
      • There will be single-lane closures from 5 a.m. Mondays through 11 a.m. Fridays.

Highway: WIS 93

  • Location: Indee Boulevard in Independence to the north county line
  • Schedule: May 4 to October
  • Cost: $11.24 million
  • Description: Paving WIS 93, cold-in-place recycling, replacing culverts, lining pipes, updating curb ramps, marking pavement and installing guardrail, signing and centerline and edge line rumble strips.
  • Traffic impacts: Traffic is being controlled by flagging
