SAWYER COUNTY (DrydenWire) - A Hayward woman with six prior OWI convictions is facing a seventh felony drunk driving charge after a Sawyer County Sheriff’s Deputy observed her vehicle swerve into a ditch and nearly strike several mailboxes in the Town of Bass Lake on August 9, 2025.
According to the criminal complaint, 65-year-old Valerie Rice admitted to drinking “all day” at a local bar before driving. A subsequent lab test showed her blood alcohol concentration was 0.158, nearly twice the legal limit, and well over her .02 blood alcohol restriction. Rice now faces felony charges of 7th Offense Operating While Intoxicated and Operating with a Prohibited Alcohol Concentration.
