Today, Attorney General Brad Schimel announced the implementation of the Imminent Threat to Law Enforcement (ITLE) notification, which will use the Transaction Information for Management of Enforcement (TIME) System to provide warnings and other critical information to law enforcement officers.
“Law enforcement officers leave the safety of their homes each day without knowing what they will encounter. Just last week, we saw a New York City Police officer ambushed,” said Attorney General Schimel. “We have no greater responsibility than giving the men and women who wear the uniform all the resources and tools possible to return safely at the end of every shift. The implementation of ITLE will provide an additional level of security that will help law enforcement conduct their jobs more safely and effectively.”
In the event of an imminent threat, a message will be sent via ITLE by the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) to law enforcement officers, and/or law enforcement agencies may send a message if the following criteria are met:
- Threat to cause death or serious injury to a law enforcement officer;
- Death or serious injury of a law enforcement officer in the line of duty; and/or
- Law enforcement officer missing in connection with official duties.
Established more than four decades ago, the TIME System is used by all state and local law enforcement officers for the transmission of law enforcement information. The TIME System is managed and maintained by the DOJ Crime Information Bureau.
DOJ is also working with chiefs of police and sheriffs to evaluate if the establishment of a Blue Alert will bring value in addition to ITLE.
