UPDATE: 11-Year-Old Involved In Rollover Crash In Chippewa County Has Passed Away

CHIPPEWA COUNTY -- (UPDATE) -- The 11-year-old who was involved in the fatal single-vehicle crash in Chippewa County on June 10, has passed away, according to a brief one-sentence updated press release from the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff James Kowalczyk said that "with much regret, I am sad to announce the passing of 11-year-old Tara M. Lemay, daughter of Sara Lemay who were both involved in the traffic accident."

CHIPPEWA COUNTY — Sara M. Lemay, 48, passed away from injuries she sustained in a single-vehicle rollover crash Friday night in the Township of Cleveland. An 11-year-old passenger was also flown to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to a press release from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the press release, on Friday, June 10, 2022, at 8:32p, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one-vehicle crash. It was reported that a vehicle was upside down in a swamp. The caller along with the assistance of others located an adult female in the water.

They pulled the female out of the water and began life-saving measures. They also located a juvenile who was trapped inside the vehicle and were able to pull them out of the vehicle which was submerged in the water. They immediately began life-saving measures on the juvenile, according to authorities.

Upon the arrival of the first responder, life-saving measures were continued.

Authorities say that the adult female passed away from her injuries and the juvenile was flown by Lifelink to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation shows the adult female was operating the vehicle that was traveling eastbound on State Highway 64 when the operator lost control causing the vehicle to enter the ditch. The vehicle overturned coming to rest upside down mostly submerged in the water, according to the press release.

The crash remains under investigation by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office.
