Birchwood School District
The October High School Student of the Month is 12th grader, Katie Hartung! Katie is a member of Conservation Club, National Honor Society, Newspaper and Forensics. She is also the President of FBLA. Katie has had a lot of success in her clubs, as she’s competed at the state competition in both FBLA and Forensics several times! Katie is also a Varsity letterwinner in volleyball, a sport at which she excels.
Katie was nominated for this award because of her great attitude and her passion and helping other people. The CPTO hosted their annual fundraiser where every Birchwood student is asked to sell items in order to give back to our school.
Immediately after the fundraising packets were handed out, Katie went to several high school teachers asking if they would like to purchase items from her. When asked why she was so quick to sell, Katie stated that, “the CPTO does so much for our school, so why wouldn’t I try to help them out the most I could?”. It’s this sincerely caring and altruistic attitude that Katie has that makes her such a joy to know. In addition to this, she volunteers for service projects such as Adopt-a-Family and food pantry help through clubs like FBLA and NHS. She has also been a great leader of the class of 2017, where she has helped plan various events like prom and Pink out the Gym, and activities to keep school running smooth.
Overall, Katie is a kind, thoughtful, and responsible student who is always willing to volunteer her time to make Birchwood a better place. Any teacher that’s had Katie in class will tell you how sweet and caring she is, and they mean it. She is wonderful young lady, and we’re so glad to have her as a student at Birchwood High.
