Burnett County Inmate Who Became Unresponsive While Sitting At Jail Table Dies

BURNETT COUNTY -- An inmate at the Burnett County Jail has died after he was discovered to be unresponsive while sitting at a table in jail, according to a press release from the Burnett County Sheriff's Office.

On June 24, 2022, at 1:41 p.m., Inmate Joshua J. Staples, 41 years of age, became unresponsive while sitting at a table in one of the dormitory cellblocks. Mr. Staples was lowered to the floor by a fellow inmate.

The on-duty dispatcher was monitoring the cameras in the jail and saw this occur. The dispatcher notified the Corrections Deputies who were on duty.

Corrections Deputies entered that cellblock at 1:41 p.m. After assessing Mr. Staples, CPR was started by the deputies at 1:42 p.m. Lifesaving measures were performed by members of the Sheriff’s Office until North Ambulance arrived at 1:47 p.m.

Continued life-saving measures were performed by North Ambulance. Mr. Staples was pronounced deceased at 2:20 p.m.

This case is under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
