BURNETT COUNTY — As a stand-alone hospital and clinic, Burnett Medical Center has been a dedicated Reach Out and Read site since 2012. Over the years, the clinic has logged more than 2,000 well-child visits, providing vital support to families by helping parents embrace their role as their child’s first—and favorite—teacher.
Under the leadership of new Clinic Manager Jen Hoefs, the team at Burnett Medical Center continues to prioritize excellence. Jen has been working diligently to ensure clinicians receive the latest training in early relational health (i.e. healthy bonding), which emphasizes the importance of strong, nurturing relationships between parents and children. These relationships not only support healthy growth and development but also serve as a buffer against the stresses families may face, especially in rural areas.
Leading the charge for Reach Out and Read at Burnett Medical Center is Melinda Deye, NP, a committed medical champion who has been instrumental in promoting early literacy. Melinda is also actively engaged in the broader community, cultivating local support and showcasing the transformative impact of early reading on young children’s lives.
During a recent annual visit, Tamra White, Chief Administrative Officer at Burnett Medical Center, noted one of the favorite book choices of clinic staff and families is the Elephant and Piggie series. Tamra gave program manager, Julie Dorshorst, a dramatic read of “Pigs Make Me Sneeze.” Her enthusiasm and animated narration transformed Julie into an Elephant and Piggie fan. This affirms how valuable it can be when a book is shared with enthusiasm!
