EAA Chapter 631 will be celebrating International Young Eagles Day at the Warbirds North Airport west of Trego on June 9th, 2018. Free airplane rides will be given to youth ages 8 to 17 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (weather permitting). A parent or guardian must sign a permission form for the flight. Pre-registration is encouraged at: https://www.flightsquid.com/event/3331
The Young Eagles program was started in 1992 by the Experimental Aircraft Association head quartered in Oshkosh, WI. The goal was to give one million free rides by 2004 which was the 100th anniversary of the first powered flight by the Wright Brothers in Kitty Hawk, NC. That goal was met and to date more than 2 million free airplane rides have been given all over the world.
Young people are given the chance to experience the wonders of flight and develop an interest in aviation.
EAA Chapter 631 is made up of local pilots and members who are interested in private aviation. Each summer the group gives free airplane rides at local airports in the area.
Since 1997 the chapter has given more than 9,000 free rides.
Before the flight the pilot explains the basic parts of the aircraft, how an airplane flies and how pre-flight safety inspections are done. The flights last about 20 minutes and in some cases the kids have a chance to see their home from the air.
Each individual will receive a flight logbook and a Young Eagle certificate. Their name will be entered into the World’s largest logbook at the EAA museum in Oshkosh WI.
