UPDATE: Names Released in Chippewa County Sheriff's Deputy Stabbing Incident

A 12-year veteran of the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department is recovering at home following an incident in which he was stabbed. The suspect, identified as Travis Abbiehl, age 35 of Caddott, WI, is currently in custody awaiting formal charges, according to a Press Release from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department.

(Press Release) — Sheriff James Kowalczyk would like to express his gratitude to all the agencies that assisted the Chippewa County Sheriff's Department in this incident/investigation. The Chippewa Falls Police Department, EMS and Fire Departments, and a "Thank You"  to retired Captain Eugene Gutsch who arrived and assisted the Sheriff's Department shortly after the incident occurred.
The incident remains under investigation, there after a complete report will be forwarded to the Chippewa County District Attorney's Office for their review and consideration for charges.

  • Deputy Injured: Sgt. Andrew Clark a 12 year veteran of the Chippewa County Sheriff's Department.
    • SGT. Clark was stabbed with a knife in the left shoulder in an attempt to restrain a suspect.
    • SGT. Clark was treated and released from Mayo Health of Eau Claire, WI.
    • SGT. Clark is recovering at his residence in rural Chippewa Falls, WI.
  • Suspect: Travis A Abbiehl age 35 of Cadott WI.
    • Travis Abbiehl is currently in custody facing numerous charges regarding the incident.

Saturday, August 25, 2018 | News Release


On Saturday, August 25, 2018 at about 09:49 a.m. the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a suspicious persons call on 90th Street near STH 29. Information was given by the reporter that his 35 year old brother was not taking his prescribed medication and was acting erratic.

Upon deputies’ arrival, deputies saw a male seated in a vehicle parked on 90th Street holding a knife. Deputies described the male’s behavior as being harmful to himself. Deputies approached the vehicle after several attempts to communicate with the male. The male exited the vehicle, charged the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Deputy and stabbed the deputy in the shoulder. Deputies deployed their Tasers twice before the male was able to be taken into custody.

The injured deputy was transported to Mayo Hospital in Eau Claire, WI by ambulance where he was treated. The Deputy is expected to recover from the injury and was scheduled to be released on today’s date.

The male suspect was detained and transported for evaluation at this time.  

The names will be released at a later date pending further investigation.
