Community First: How NorthLakes Brings Care Closer To Home In Turtle Lake

TURTLE LAKE, WI — NorthLakes Community Clinic provides inclusive care in Turtle Lake in a region where healthcare access can be challenging. As one of 20 clinics across 19 Wisconsin communities, the Turtle Lake location exemplifies the mission of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) to deliver quality care regardless of ability to pay.

"We believe everyone deserves access to comprehensive healthcare services," says Clinic Manager Nikki Liedl. "Our Turtle Lake clinic offers a wide range of services that address both physical and mental well-being, creating a true healthcare home for area residents."

The Turtle Lake clinic provides an impressive array of services under one roof, including counseling, chiropractic care with X-ray capabilities, comprehensive dental services, and recovery and substance use support.

What distinguishes NorthLakes from traditional clinics are its federal grant requirements: offering services regardless of payment ability, maintaining a sliding fee discount program, operating as a nonprofit, and governance by a patient-majority board.

"The sliding fee scale has been a lifesaver for many in our community," notes Liedl. "We welcome everyone regardless of their insurance status — whether they have private insurance, BadgerCare, or no insurance."

The community-based governance model ensures that NorthLakes responds directly to local healthcare needs. The patient-majority board meets monthly to guide operations and strategic decisions, focusing on serving the community effectively.

Since its founding in 2008, NorthLakes has worked to fill gaps in healthcare across northern Wisconsin. Beyond their clinic walls, they provide dental and behavioral health services in schools, bring dental care to skilled nursing facilities, and collaborate with WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) programs.

For Turtle Lake residents, having a comprehensive community health center means more than just a place to receive care—it represents a commitment to creating "healthy, prosperous, engaged communities where everyone thrives," as stated in the organization's vision.
