BURNETT COUNTY -- Charges of Child Sexual Assault have been filed against a convicted sex offender, who formerly resided in Webster, WI.

A criminal complaint filed on December 10, 2018 in Burnett County Circuit Court charges Mitchell Lane Butler with four counts of Class B Felony 1st Degree Child Sexual Assault - Intercourse with Person under 12.

Online circuit court records show that Butler was previously found guilty of 3rd Degree Sexual Assault in August 2000 in Burnett County. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections Offender Locator indicates that Butler has been incarcerated in Oshkosh Correctional Facility since December 11, 2018. According to the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry, Butler is required to register as a sex offender until August 2027.

The criminal complaint filed against Butler alleges that in 2015 between March and June, Butler sexually assaulted two children on multiple occasions. The children were ages 8 and 7 at the time of the alleged assaults.

In April and May of 2018, Burnett County Social Workers and Burnett County Sheriff’s Investigators conducted forensic interviews with the two children.

During the forensic interviews the children provided detailed information regarding the alleged assaults including descriptions of the clothing that the children had worn at the time of the assaults and the rooms where the assaults had occurred, as well as describing clothing worn by Butler at the time of the assaults.

One of the children stated that Butler had provided her with a pill to help her sleep. The child went on to state that after awakening she realized that she had sustained injuries from a sexual assault, however she did not tell anyone at the time.

Investigators were also told by one of the children that they were afraid of Butler at the time of the assaults because they had seen him physically assaulting another individual on a regular basis. It is not known to DrydenWire.com at this time if additional charges will be filed against Butler pertaining to those allegations.

According to online circuit court records, Butler has numerous criminal convictions including Sex Offender Registry Violation, Burglary, Domestic Battery, Domestic Disorderly Conduct, and Possession of Methamphetamine.

If convicted, Butler faces a maximum penalty of 60 years imprisonment on each of the four charges filed against him.

At the time of this post, an active arrest warrant is pending in Burnett County for Butler and no future court date is scheduled.

Pursuant to the direction of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, as found in Supreme Court Rule 20:3.6, Trial Publicly, you are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
