CORNELL, WI — A morning incident at Citizens State Bank prompted a brief precautionary school lockdown before authorities secured the scene, according to the Cornell Police Department.

On Thursday, 04/16/2026, at approximately 9:40 am, the Cornell Police Department responded to an incident at Citizens State Bank, 221 Bridge St, Cornell, Wisconsin. As a precaution, nearby schools were placed on a temporary lockdown while officers worked to assess and manage the situation.

The scene was quickly secured by responding officers. The lockdown has since been lifted, and normal school operations have resumed.

The Cornell Police Department identified the offender in this incident as 40-year-old Kevin Wayne Rasmussen, of Woodville, Wisconsin. Rasmussen has been taken into custody and is being held on the charge of Attempted Robbery of a financial institution. You are advised that a charge is merely an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

This was determined to be an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public at this time.

The Cornell Police Department was assisted by the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin State Patrol, Eau Claire County Sheriff's Office, Dunn County Sheriff's Office, St Croix County Sheriff's Office, and the Village of Woodville Police Department.
