Court Finds Man Not Competent To Stand Trial; Commitment Ordered

SAWYER COUNTY — The Court has issued an Order of Commitment for a man from Couderay, WI who is charged with exposing himself to multiple children in the neighborhood surrounding his residence.

DrydenWire.com reported in August 2019 that Matthew Baker of Couderay, WI was charged with 1 count of Class D Felony Child Enticement-Expose Genitals/Pubic Area/Intimate Parts, and 2 counts of Class I Felony Exposing Genitals/Pubic Area/Intimate Parts to a Child after the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department investigated reports that Baker had exposed himself to multiple children in the neighborhood.

Baker had also recently made unusual requests such as giving a television and an Xbox gaming console to one of the children, according to the criminal complaint filed against him.

The Court placed Baker on a $5,000 cash bail bond. Online circuit court records indicate that at Baker’s Initial Appearance hearing the issue of competency was raised and the Court ordered that an exam for competency be conducted.

At a a recent hearing, the Court heard testimony from a doctor who examined Baker, and according to online circuit court records, the Court found that Baker is not competent to stand trial at this time and issued an Order of Commitment to the Department for 12 months, which indicates that Baker will be committed to a facility for treatment for a period of 12 months.
