SAWYER COUNTY -- The Court has sentenced Neil Martinson, Sr., one of five people who received criminal charges following a Sawyer County investigation into suspected drug trafficking.

In February 2021, law enforcement received information regarding suspected drug trafficking activity. A search warrant was obtained by law enforcement and during the execution of the search warrant, throughout the house in various rooms officers found multiple firearms including shotguns; a large amount of ammunition; marijuana; suspected heroin and fentanyl; digital scale; numerous pills; cash; at least one hypodermic syringe loaded with a liquid that tested positive for heroin; and numerous devices used for smoking controlled substances.

Following the search warrant, criminal charges were filed in Sawyer County Circuit Court against five people: Neil Martinson, Sr.; Neil Martinson, Jr.; Yvonne Martinson; Levon Smith; and Javaka Starkey.

Neil Martinson, Sr.

Neil Martinson, Sr. received charges for Class I Felony Possession of Narcotic Drugs and Class I Felony Maintain Drug Trafficking Place, and online circuit court records show that Martinson appeared most recently on February 10, 2022, for a hearing in Sawyer County Circuit Court regarding his charges.

The Court accepted Martinson’s plea of guilty to both charges and ordered an imposed and stayed prison sentence of 3 years and 6 months on each conviction. The Court ordered Martinson to serve 2 years of probation concurrently on each conviction. Should Martinson’s probation be revoked, he will face initial confinement in prison for 1 year and 6 months on each conviction, to be served consecutively, followed by 2 years of extended supervision on each conviction.

Conditions of probation will require Martinson to maintain absolute sobriety, and complete both an AODA assessment and any counseling and programming deemed appropriate by his Department of Corrections agent.

Yvonne Martinson

Yvonne Martinson is facing a charge of Class E Felony Possess w/ Intent/Deliver Narcotics. A hearing is scheduled for Yvonne in April 2022.

Neil W. Martinson, Jr.

Neil W. Martinson, Jr. is facing charges of Class I Felony Maintain Drug Trafficking Place; Misdemeanor Possession of THC; and Misdemeanor Possess Drug Paraphernalia. Another hearing is scheduled in March 2022, regarding Martinson, Jr.’s charges.

Levon Smith

Levon Smith of Minneapolis is charged with Class E Felony Possess w/ Intent/Deliver Narcotics; Class H Felony Misappropriate ID Info - Avoid Penalty; and Class I Felony Possess w/Intent-THC (<=200 grams). Online circuit court records show that Smith failed to appear for a court hearing in May 2021 and on May 25, 2021, the Court issued a nationwide arrest warrant for him.

Javaka Starkey

Starkey’s plead Guilty to his charges of Class E Felony Manuf/Deliver Schedule I, II Narcotics; and Class G Felony Possess Firearm-Convicted of a Felony in November 2021, and the Court ordered him to serve one year of county jail confinement with credit for 258 days served for his conviction of Class G Felony Possess Firearm-Convicted of a Felony followed by 5 years of probation for his conviction of Class E Felony Manuf/Deliver Schedule I, II Narcotics. Should Starkey’s probation be revoked he will face five years of initial confinement in state prison to be followed by five years of extended supervision.
