WASHBURN COUNTY (DrydenWire) - Court records indicate that what initially appeared to be a routine vehicle theft in Washburn County quickly escalated into a far more serious criminal investigation.
According to a criminal complaint, a white Hummer H2 was taken from the parking lot of Jack’s Canoe Rentals in Trego, WI, in August 2025, while its owners were on the river, then later found burned and destroyed near the Birchwood Fire Lane.
Security camera footage, witness statements, and cellphone location data would ultimately be cited by investigators as they built a case leading to felony charges against Michael Mears, age 41, of Birchwood, WI.
