An old-world treat is served regionally. An Jitrnice (EE-thr-nyit-seh) Dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 3rd at the Česká Opera House in Haugen (320 W. 3rd Street).
The cost of the meal is $10 for age 12 and above; $5 for ages 5-11; and free for children under age 5.
The sausage will be served with potato dumplings and gravy, sauerkraut, rye bread, corn, cranberry sauce, kolache, and water, coffee or milk. There is also a cash beer and wine bar available. Live old-time dinner music will be performed from stage during the meal by Arnie Checkalski of Rice Lake and Vern and Bob Seckora of Spooner.
In addition to the meal, fresh sausage, dumplings, rye bread and kolache will be available for sale.
Jitrnice is a traditional Czech pork sausage known in every community where Czechs settle. It was traditionally made with scrap meat and organ meat and used like a breakfast sausage. The Česká Opera version is made using better cuts and has no organ meat.
The Česká Opera Foundation has been offering Jitrnice Dinners since 1991, with only a short hiatus following the death of original sausage master Jack Posta in 2004. In the debut year, despite being battered by the great Halloween Storm of 1991 which dropped 20+ inches of snow over the three days prior to the dinner, it was still held to a large crowd of “cabin fevered” patrons.
