SPOONER, Wis. -- Joni Campbell, an art teacher for thirty-two years in the Shell Lake school system, decided that just because she was no longer teaching children didn’t mean she couldn’t still teach art.
She teamed with Marie King to create a painting party business they call Colors and Canvas. Recently they had a party in the Spooner Vet Clinic for fifteen of the employees and during the two-hour art class not only did everyone get to know their fellow employee better, but they also created their own masterpieces. Many of them had so much fun they’re already looking to doing it again.
The parties begin with a phone call or email to Marie and she sends a flyer showing some of the finished projects that might interest the group. When a subject is chosen, a party is booked with a ten person minimum.
The day of the party Joni and Marie show up with easels, canvases, acrylic paints, brushes and everything else that will be needed. Joni demonstrates the step-by-step painting techniques and then the class starts on their version of the demonstrated art.
Each person is encouraged to do their own interpretation of the original painting and many students are amazed to find their own creativity that’s been inside of them all the time.
Rachael Wellvang, a kennel attendant, decided to stay pretty close to the original, but Joy French, a receptionist, decided to make the painting truly hers by adding a few more touches.
This is the beauty of a painting party, paint exactly what you see, or let your wild artist out.
These parties can be booked to celebrate occasions, like a birthday or a shower, and they can just be for fun. They can be in a home, a clubhouse at a golf club, a church, a business or there’s even one held the third Tuesday of each month at the Corner Pub in Spooner. You can join in by calling Marie and letting her know you’ll be attending.
Whether your goal is a girls night out, or an office team building event or a family reunion, Colors and Canvas provides a great deal of fun and something new that you maybe didn’t even know existed.
