SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), at the request of the Superior Police Department, has been investigating an officer involved shooting (OIS) that took place on the morning of October 5, 2018 in the City of Superior.
Superior Police officers were dispatched to investigate a theft at a business and located the suspect about a half mile away in the Central Park neighborhood. A confrontation occurred, and the man was shot by officers. The officers immediately began lifesaving measures on the man until Superior Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance paramedics arrived. The man was transported to a Duluth hospital. The man was conscious when he was transported from the scene.
The victim-suspect’s identity will not be released by law enforcement because he has not been charged with a crime at this time. He currently remains at a hospital recovering from injuries, and is in stable condition.
The following law enforcement officers were involved in this critical incident and have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of this investigation, per the departments’ policies.
- Officer George Gothner, 20 years in law enforcement;
- Officer Michael Kendall, 12 years in law enforcement;
- Officer Christopher Woolery, 8 years in law enforcement.
The Wisconsin DOJ-led investigation of this incident has been a collaboration between DCI and the Wisconsin State Patrol, with assistance from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Superior Police Department has been fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.
DCI is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Douglas County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
