Dr. Gary Sloniker Retires as Voluntary Veterinary Advisor

Dr. Gary Sloniker, DVM has been the Volunteer Veterinary Advisor for the Health Department’s Certified Rabies Control Program for 24 years.  The Program was approved by Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection on May 12, 1993 and is referred to as “Ag 13”.

Under Ag 13, vaccinated animals may be quarantined at home for the required 10 days (providing there is a proper isolation area) and “Certified Trained Observers” (Public Health Nurses) observe the animal at the home residence twice during the 10 day quarantine.  There is no fee for this service.  Unvaccinated animals must be quarantined (at the owner’s expense) at a Washburn County Veterinary facility for 10 days and vaccinated prior to release.  The animal may NOT leave the county, be sold, given away or surrendered during quarantine.

Annual Ag 13 reporting is required in order to maintain the Ag 13 Rabies Control Program approval from the State. A quarterly meeting with our Volunteer Veterinary Advisor is also a requirement.  Local veterinary support has allowed the Health Department to continue Ag 13 programming.  Dr. Allen Pederson, DVM, Spooner Veterinary Clinic has accepted the invitation to act as the Volunteer Veterinary Advisor at Dr. Sloniker’s retirement.  We appreciate Dr. Sloniker’s 24 years of voluntary support and guidance as we enforced rabies control programming in Washburn County.
