CHIPPEWA COUNTY -- The driver of a Hummer H2 was arrested following an investigation into a fatal hit and run crash in Chippewa County, according to a press release from the Lake Hallie Police Department.
On Saturday May 2, 2020 at approximately 5:51AM, Lake Hallie Police were dispatched to CTH OO near 30th Ave. in Lake Hallie for a report of a subject in the ditch who appeared unresponsive. Lake Hallie Police arrived on scene and found Dennis Mohr age 60 of Eau Claire deceased from what appeared to be injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
Officers located an auto part left on scene from the crash and determined it came from a Hummer H2 SUV. Officers were aware of a vehicle matching this description in a nearby neighborhood. Officers located the striking vehicle and found the part left on scene belonged to the suspect vehicle. Lake Hallie officers and investigators from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department spoke with Christopher J. Peterson age 38 of Lake Hallie who admitted to driving the vehicle. The Chippewa County District Attorney’s Office was contacted, and officers arrested Peterson for Hit and Run – Involving Death.
Wisconsin State Patrol assisted with a reconstruction of the crash.

The crash remains under active investigation by the Lake Hallie Police Department with assistance of Investigators from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department.
Peterson, the driver of the striking vehicle, consented to a legal blood draw and that sample will be tested for drugs and alcohol. The results of the blood draw will not be available for weeks. The victim who was struck, Mohr, was walking in the lane of traffic prior to the crash.
