Drone With Thermal Imagery Help Locate Injured Driver From Single-Vehicle Crash

SAWYER COUNTY -- With the aid of the drones thermal imaging, Sawyer County deputies were able to Wyatt Z. Berge, 20, of Radisson, WI who sustained injuries as a result of a single-vehicle crash in Sawyer County, accoriding to a press release from the Sawyer County Sheriff's Office.

On July 12th, 2020 at approximately 10:35pm, Sawyer County Deputies assisted by the City of Hayward Police Department, Sawyer County EMS/Paramedic, Town of Hayward Fire Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to a single vehicle crash on US Highway 63 in the Town of Lenroot. The initial report advised a witness observed a vehicle leave the road and crash through a fence.

Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the witness who directed them to the location of the accident. Deputies followed tire tracks across a field and located the vehicle over a small embankment that had come to a rest in a swampy area. The vehicle was unoccupied, but contained signs of possible occupant injury, as the driver’s airbag was deployed. After unsuccessful attempts to search the swampy area, deputies utilized the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office drone. With the aid of the drones thermal imaging and the internal speaker capabilities, deputies were able to locate the injured driver in the swamp.



The driver, Wyatt Z. Berge age 20 of Radisson, sustained injuries as a result of the crash and was transported by Sawyer County Ambulance to the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.

The accident remains under investigation by the Sawyer County Sheriff’s office.
