Statement from Eau Claire PD on Officer-Involved Shooting

On April 8, 2017, at 10:51 am the Eau Claire Police Department received a call reporting a man was acting suspiciously in a hallway of the Westwinds apartment building located at 2214 Peters Drive. The caller reported the man was banging on doors and causing a disturbance. Several Eau Claire Police Officers responded to this location as a result of this call.

The first Eau Claire Police Officer who arrived at the apartment complex located a man in the parking lot carrying a knife. Several other officers arrived on scene shortly thereafter. The man acted aggressively towards officers and verbal communication was ineffective. Less lethal options were deployed to include bean bag rounds and Taser. Neither of those options were effective and at that point, an Eau Claire Police Officer shot the suspect. Officers immediately began performing life-saving efforts on this man but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. No citizens or Eau Claire Police Officers were injured during this incident.

Per Wisconsin State Statutes and Eau Claire Police Department policy, investigations of this nature are investigated by an outside law enforcement agency. The La Crosse Police Department has been requested and is currently investigating this incident.

At this point in the investigation, neither the name of the involved officer nor the suspect are being released. The decedent is a 25-year old male and his name will be released following family notifications.

The Eau Claire Police Officer involved in this shooting is a 20-year year veteran of the department. Per department policy and best practices, this officer is on administrative assignment pending review of the investigation.

No further information will be released until interviews of the involved officers have been completed.
