Finance Committee Supports Barron Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory

MADISON, WI -- Thanks to a budget motion from Senator Romaine Robert Quinn (R-Cameron) and Representative Dave Armstrong (R-Rice Lake), the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance voted late last week to approve funding to secure the upgrades to the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Barron. First opened in 1958, the Barron laboratory supports both the dairy and poultry industries.

“For multiple legislative sessions, Representative Armstrong and I have brought funding to Barron to help this great facility that, in turn, helps so many dairy and poultry farms throughout our region,” said Senator Quinn. “Among other projects, the lab will aid in rapid response to the bird flu. The poultry industry is of vital importance to Barron County’s economy. This new round of dollars will ensure that the lab can complete its necessary upgrades and survive for many years to come.”

Representative Armstrong added: “Last session, I thought I had completed the work that then-Representative Quinn started the previous session& by securing sufficient funding for the Barron lab’s expansion and renovation from the Joint Finance Committee. However, COVID escalated costs on virtually all construction projects throughout the nation, and this project was put on hold as a result. It has been a pleasure to work with Senator Quinn to once again obtain the necessary funding for this project so the lab can serve our agricultural industry for years to come.”

Information on this funding request and all bonding authority made available through the state’s building program can be found in Motion #87 at the Legislature’s website.
