Body Discovered After Building Fire In Polk County Extinguished

POLK COUNTY -- On Monday, March 28, 2022, at 4:34a, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office received two 911 calls reporting that a structure was on fire near 2nd Avenue Southwest and Milltown Avenue West in the Village of Milltown.

It was initially reported that the building was fully engulfed, and the roof was gone, according to a press release from the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Upon arrival, the Milltown Fire Department personnel observed the apartment complex located at 110 Milltown Avenue West was on fire and began extinguishing the fire. While extinguishing the blaze, fire department personnel discovered the remains of a victim.

After the fire was put out, members of the Milltown Police Department, the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations/State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office began their investigation.

The Sheriff's Office states that currently, the cause of the fire is unknown.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification to family members and further investigation.

The following agencies are assisting the Polk County Sheriff’s Office with this investigation: Milltown Fire Department, Luck Fire Department, Milltown Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations/State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office.
