BARRON COUNTY -- Charges of forgery and felony theft have been filed against Larry Titel, of Rice Lake, WI.

In April 2022, the Barron County Sheriff’s Department received information that Titel had allegedly forged signatures on over two dozen checks, writing the checks out to himself.

Titel had started working in 2020 for the owner of the checks, the victim of the theft, and was paid primarily in cash. The victim stated that they only paid Titel with a check a few times.

In August 2021, the victim was hospitalized due to an illness. A caretaker took over operations of the victim’s businesses. The caretaker found some loose cash at the victim's residence and put it away in a secure location. However, the caretaker later found that the cash was missing.

The victim received a letter from their bank in March 2022 alerting them of an overdraft on a business account. The victim found this to be strange, as they do not spend much money out of that account. The victim then discovered that a book of checks for that account was missing and some of the carbon copies had been removed from another book of checks. The victim reported the situation to the Barron County Sheriff’s Office and an investigation was initiated.

The criminal complaint filed against Titel states that Barron County Sheriff’s Detectives interviewed Titel, and he admitted to taking checks out of a checkbook belonging to the victim. Titel said he thought he took five checks and that he took them because he needed the money and the victim wasn’t around. Titel allegedly agreed that the victim had not given him permission to cash the checks that Titel took. The criminal complaint does not state if Titel admitted to also taking the missing cash.

Titel is charged with Class H Felony Forgery, and Class I Felony Theft of Movable Property (cash belonging to the victim). He is scheduled to make an initial appearance on his charges on June 8, 2022. At the time of this post, online court records do not list any bail bond information for Titel.

Pursuant to the direction of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, as found in Supreme Court Rule 20:3.6, Trial Publicly, you are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
