UPDATE: SASD Provides Update On Spooner Middle School Situation

SPOONER, WI -- The Spooner Area School District has evacuated children from the Spooner Middle School, according to a press release from SASD.

Press Release - The City of Spooner has a vendor coating sewer pipes on the city streets near Spooner Middle School. The process has caused a strong odor in the Middle School Building. No injuries have occured because of this, but some staff and students have reported discomfort due to the odor. Out of an abundance of caution, the Middle School students and staff have been evacuated to their predetermined evacuation site. Students and staff are anticipated to return to the Middle School around lunch time.

UPDATE: Multiple first responders have staged at the Spooner Wesleyan Church as Washburn County Dispatch received a report of an apparent gas leak with one person being unconscious. Multiple children are being reported as being sick. Two are currently en route to Spooner Hospital. The latest report is there are more patients than units (ambulances) at this time.

UPDATE 2: The Spooner Middle School Principal has issued the following letter to parents:

This letter is to notify you of a gas smell that is present in our building due to the cleaning of nearby storm drains. In an abundance of caution an evacuation of the building was ordered. At about 8:30 a.m. a smell was present in the hallways coming from air ducts of Spooner Middle School. Students and staff were immediately cleared from the area and the building was evacuated as a safety precaution. Building and Grounds crew are working to resolve this matter, so the students and staff can return to the building as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience while we resolve this situation.

UPDATE 3: Kids are being taken by ambulance to Spooner, Shell Lake, and Cumberland Hospitals.

UPDATE 4: The following letter was sent to Spooner Middle School Parents at 11:45a:

Providing an update on middle school situation. Students were evacuated from the middle school due to an epoxy odor that drifted into the building from the construction on the storm drains. Middle School students are currently at the Spooner Wesleyan Church and are having their lunch at this location. Students will be transported to the Spooner High School Auditorium using Badger Buses. Parents wishing to pick up their students can go to the high school at 12:15 to pick them up. Students that are not picked up by their parents will be bussed home. If you have any additional questions please feel free to contact the district office at 715-635-2171. If there are concerns about individual students, parents will be contacted directly. SASD Admin.
