Support Your Local Sheriff's Special Response Team

Support Your Local Sheriff's Special Response Team

WASHBURN COUNTY, Wis. -- There is still time to buy your raffle ticket, before the drawing on July 29th, in support of our Special Response Team and their efforts to continue the preparing our two Armored Vehicles for use on high-risk calls. In this new age of frequent assaults on law enforcement, the propensity of using weapons against our officers and the others is an increasing concern for all.

Not only are you supporting the SRT but you have a good chance of winning the cash prizes. We are only selling 200 tickets, so get one while they are still available. They are $100 each. $3000, $2,000, $1,000 and $500 prizes, with only 200 tickets to sell your odds at winning are pretty good. You can call 715-468-4700 and we will make sure we get one to you or stop into the Sheriff’s Office while in Shell Lake. Raffle Tickets are also available at Tony’s Riverside in Spooner, the Body Shop’s Fitness Centers in Spooner and Shell Lake and Ed’s Pit Stop in Birchwood.

The Special Response Team is a multiple-agency team that incorporates officers from Spooner PD, Shell Lake PD, Minong PD and Washburn County Sheriff’s Deputies. They are on call 24/7/365 for any high-risk call that presents a significant likelihood of danger to the public or law enforcement officers. They have specialized equipment and heavy body armor for their protection against high power weapons. Our SRT are well known for their expertise in effecting arrests, executing search warrants of those would intend harm to the public, themselves or officers. We should all give thanks that these dedicated officers place themselves, voluntarily in dangerous situations, for our protection.

We ask your support in continuing our efforts to provide an additional level of protection for the Special Response Team. Some of said in the past that the County Board should provide the funds for the Armored Vehicle effort. The Washburn County Board is very supportive of the SRT, case in point, they authorized an additional $32,000 this year, to purchase the new specialized heavy body armor that is required for their protection against higher powered weapons. The two Armored Vehicles were initially planned for the coming year’s budget process but we had the opportunity to get two from the Federal Excess Property Program this year at no cost, except transportation. In light of the recent Rusk County shooting of a Deputy Sheriff and nationwide assaults against officers, I just felt compelled, for our officer’s safety, to grab these two vehicles this year. So this was a surprise to our County Board Supervisors. Several reasons for asking the public’s help, lessen the impact on the levy and give you an opportunity to support the SRT efforts and to have a chance to win the cash prizes.

Washburn Co. Sheriff's Office Adds Two Armored Humvees to Fleet; Announces Raffle

Thursday, April 6, 2017 | Press Release

WASHBURN COUNTY, Wis. -- In light of recent events where officers nationwide have been shot and killed in the performance of their duties, Washburn County Sheriff, Terry Dryden, took the opportunity through the Federal Surplus Program to apply for two up-armored High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) from the Federal Government.

After a lengthy justification process, the Sheriff’s request was approved several months ago. Both of these M1114 up-armored HMMWV’s have been delivered to the county.

One is a 2003 with 524 miles and the second is a 2004 with 579 miles. These vehicles were initially purchased for the military at a cost of $192,000 each. However, other than the cost of transportation, they were given to the Washburn County Sheriff's Office for free.

They are currently being housed in the County’s Highway Maintenance building, where the gun mounts and shields have been removed and will be returned to the federal government. They will be painted black and the proper decals will be put on, along with the emergency lights that are required so they can be operated on the roadways.

The Special Response Team (SRT) along with additional Sheriff’s Office staff will assist with the sanding and prep work and C&J Body Shop in Spooner has graciously consented to donate their labor to paint the vehicles with paint that has been donated by Single Source, Baldwin WI.

When ready, these vehicles will be used on high-risk calls such as barricaded suspects, hostage incidents and high-risk search warrants where the Special Response Team needs additional protection in addition to their personal body armor. These vehicles will also aid in search and rescue operations, flooding, or where the terrain prohibits other emergency vehicles from navigating.

We welcome the public to support the continued use of these vehicles by joining our Raffle. Cash prizes to the winners; $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place, $1,000 for third place and $500 for fourth. Raffle Tickets are available starting today!!!

Only 200 tickets will be sold and they are $100 each.

Proceeds from the Raffle will be used to pay the expense of transportation, current maintenance needs and equipping the Armored HMMWV’s with radios and equipment.

All the money will be submitted to the Washburn County Treasurer’s Office and all prizes will be paid by check from the same office ensuring that all of the finances involved in this contest will be subject to audit.

If you would like to be involved in this worthy project to help serve and protect the citizens of Washburn County, make your check payable to the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office, memo line to read, Hummer Project.

Tickets can be purchased at the Sheriff’s Office in Shell Lake, either stop in or call 715-468-4700 or you can message from our Facebook Page to the Sheriff and we will see to it that you get a ticket. The drawing will be at 5 o’clock on July 29th, 2017 at the Washburn County Sheriff’s booth at the Washburn County 4-H Junior Fair. We hope to have the Hummers already to go by then and on display at the fairgrounds.
