This will be my last article about how I came to the faith after being an unbeliever and occultist for 33 years, and how it was that I came to the faith after not believing in Jesus or the Christian God.
In my last article, I wrote a little bit about what I was going through and feeling when at the age of 44 I had finally “come to myself.”
After having to use the Bible to do the homework in this faith-based drug and alcohol program I was going through, some of the things I was reading really impacted me, but didn’t want to believe it, because after all, the Bible was just another mythology book like all the other ones I studied.
One day someone had thrown a book under my cell door called “The Case For Christ,” by Lee Strobel. This book dramatically changed my life. After reading it and reading about Lee’s changed life, I could no longer deny the fact that Jesus Christ was real and it validated the Bible for me. I am a facts guy, and I knew of none of these facts before.
It has been 8 years in January since I became a born again Christ follower, and have studied apologetics and theology for all of these years and continue to be amazed at all the facts out there which support Jesus and the Bible, yet so many still remain ignorant. Yet these same people, like my old self, happily support the ludicrous claims that we were all created by chance, or those who believe in all the millions of other gods and goddesses of other religions with no historical support or validation of any kind. Or the new agers who believe in the power of self and positive thoughts...
Did you know that Jesus was written about by at least 11 other individuals outside of the Bible? And some of these were pagans. Did you know that no one really questions or criticizes all the fact written about the Western Civilization and philosophy written by Plato, but yet the Bible gets criticized on a regular basis. Yet Plato’s works were written in 400 B.C. and the earliest known copy is from 900 A.D.. That’s a 1300 year time span, and there are only 7 copies known to exist.
Yet the New Testament was written between 50-90 A.D., and we have copies from 125 A.D., which is only a 25 year span, and there are over 25,000 copies of these manuscripts available! And then there are the Dead Sea Scrolls! And look at the fact that archeology continually verifies what has been written in the scriptures!
I could go on for days, but the core of the problem of unbelief is sin! We choose to remain in darkness because we do not want to be accountable to anyone but ourselves. Paul said in Romans chapter 1 that we are all without excuse. That even outside of the Scriptures, what is known about God is made plain to us all through His creation, and when we exchange the glory of God for other things, we become fools and our minds are darkened. My mind was darkened for 33 years, but finally found the Truth: The Light of Jesus Christ.
