Authorities Investigating Death In City Of Hayward

SAWYER COUNTY -- The City of Hayward Police Department, Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation and the Sawyer County Sheriffs Department are investigating a death in the City of Hayward, according to a press release from the Hayward Police Department.

On Thursday, November 05, 2020, The City of Hayward Police Department responded to a 911 call at 15503 Davis Avenue Apartment C in the City of Hayward. Female caller, identified as Mari Isham, stated her husband would not wake up and it was unknown if he was breathing. Sawyer County Sheriffs Deputies and Sawyer County Ambulance also responded to the scene. First aid was administered to the male subject and subject was pronounced dead at the scene.   

Evidence of injuries raising concern of a possible assault were noted and an autopsy was requested and completed on the male subject identified as 47-year-old Justin Coles.

Upon completion of the autopsy, the Medical Examiners preliminary report noted blunt force injuries and evidence of strangulation.

The City of Hayward Police Department requested assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, The State of Wisconsin Crime Lab, The Wisconsin State Patrol and Sawyer County Sheriffs Department to assist in the death investigation.  

At this time, the incident remains under investigation by the City of Hayward Police Department, Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation and the Sawyer County Sheriffs Department.

There is no threat to the community from this incident.

Mari Isham is currently in custody on a probation hold placed by the Wisconsin Department of Probation and Parole.

There is no further information at this time as the incident remains under investigation.
