High-Speed Motorcycle Crash In Sawyer County Leaves Passenger Injured; Driver Flees The Scene

HAYWARD, WI -- On Monday, the City of Hayward Police Department responded to a one-vehicle accident on State Hwy 27 in Wisconsin. An adult male riding a motorcycle at high speed with a female passenger collided with the center median after swerving around another vehicle. The male suspect initially fled the scene but returned briefly, yelling at the injured female to get up and attempting to pull her onto the bike. He then left again before law enforcement arrived. The female passenger was transported to a hospital via ambulance and later airlifted to another hospital. The motorcycle was located at a residence, and the male suspect was found at a different location. Both were taken to hospitals for medical attention, according to a press release from the City of Hayward Police Department.

On Monday, May 22, 2023 at approximately 7:00PM, The City of Hayward Police Department was dispatched to a call of a one vehicle accident on State Hwy 27 at the bridge between Wheeler Road and Cty Hwy B. Officers arrived on scene and were told that an adult male operating a motorcycle at a high rate of speed with an adult female passenger had struck the center median after swerving around a vehicle in front of the motorcycle.

A witness on scene stated the male suspect drove away from the scene but came back shortly after. The witness stated the male suspect yelled at the female to get up and attempted to pull her up on the bike. The witness instructed the individual to stop moving her and the male suspect dropped her and again left the scene prior to law enforcement arriving. The witness stated that the female subject was breathing but unresponsive and the male suspect appeared to be injured.

After arriving on scene officers secured the scene and closed St Hwy 27 to all traffic. The Wisconsin State Patrol assisted by completing a reconstruction of the accident.

The female subject was transported by ambulance to the Hayward Hospital and was life lighted to another hospital. Officers were able to locate the motorcycle at a residence on Jenny Lane in Sawyer County at approximately 10:01PM and were informed by Bayfield County at approximately 11:17PM that the male suspect was located at a residence in Bayfield County near Cable. The male suspect was life lighted to a hospital for medical concerns. No names are being released at this time as this incident remains under investigation.

The City of Hayward Police Department would like to thank the Sawyer County Sheriffs Office, the Bayfield County Sheriffs Office, The Wisconsin State Patrol and the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department for their assistance in the investigation and additionally numerous citizens that called with information that ultimately led to the location of the motorcycle and male suspect.
