Homeless to be Counted Wednesday, July 26th

July 26, 2017 is the Wisconsin Point in Time Homeless Count.

Indianhead Community Action Agency (ICAA) announces that Washburn County individuals experiencing homelessness will be counted during the statewide Point-In-Time Homeless Count conducted during the night time of July 26th, 2017.

A Point-In-Time count is a statistically reliable, unduplicated count of individuals experiencing homelessness during a specific 24-hour period. This count focuses on people - singles and families - experiencing homelessness and staying in emergency shelters, transitional housing, domestic violence shelters, or are unsheltered and living on the streets or any other place not meant for human habitation.

The definition of “HOMELESSNESS” by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development is as follows:

Sheltered Individuals and Families Living in a supervised publicly or privately operated shelter designated to provide temporary living arrangements (including congregate shelters), transitional housing and hotels/motels paid for by charitable organizations or by federal, state or local government programs for low income individuals”
Unsheltered Individuals or Families With a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings, including a car, park, abandoned building, bus/train station, airport or camping ground.

The count is conducted two times a year by service providers and volunteers, and is coordinated through Indianhead Community Action Agency. In the State of Wisconsin, the count is conducted on the last Wednesday in January and July – as required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

In January of 2017, the Point-in-Time Count identified 10 individuals experiencing homelessness either sheltered or unsheltered in Washburn County. The count does not represent the total number of individuals experiencing homelessness in a given year, it is merely a snapshot of those experiencing homelessness on a specific night.
We are asking individuals and Washburn County agencies to take part in our count. If you are aware of homeless individuals or would like more information about the count please contact:

Dawn Schliesmann, Indianhead Community Action Agency, 608 Service Rd, Spooner WI, 715-635-3975.

Dawn will also be available for questions or referrals at ALBANS TABLE FREE MEAL on Wed July 26th from 4-6pm.
