Ice Out At Spooner Civic Center

Future of the Spooner Civic Center no longer includes the Wisconsin Lumberjacks.

Ice Out At Spooner Civic Center

SPOONER, WI — The Spooner Area Youth Hockey Association had a stellar year on the ice, and after 4 teams chased championships at WAHA State Tournaments to conclude the season, the time has come to take the ice out for the year.

SAYHA had over 200 registered skaters, hosted four home tournaments, a mite Jamboree with over 100 skaters, playdown games, and the WAHA Bantam 4A State Tournament. Add these special events to the plethora of practices and home games by both SAYHA and the Spooner Rails varsity hockey team and the equivalent was a BUSY Civic Center in downtown Spooner. So when the time comes to pull the plug for the year, it’s hard to watch the hundreds of hours that SAYHA volunteers spent putting in and perfecting the ice throughout the season, go down the drain.

But don’t be fooled, the Spooner Civic Center isn’t going down the drain. While the future does not include the Wisconsin Lumberjacks, the Civic Center will stay open and full of hockey action. Moving forward, SAYHA will no longer be in partnership with the WI Lumberjacks. SAYHA has determined that the Lumberjacks do not align with the mission and values of our community, and it is in the best interest and health of its organization to invite the Lumberjacks to leave.

SAYHA is a non-profit youth organization, and the elected board has spent the past year diligently focusing on the financial health of their organization to ensure they continue to grow and prosper. Because of SAYHA’s proactive approach, they are pleased to say the future of hockey in Spooner has never been better. The continued support of the community through sponsorships, donations, and attendance at games is noticed and very much appreciated!

While ice is out, remember that the Spooner Civic Center houses a 24-hour gym, ballroom, and arena floor for meetings, weddings, parties, and events of all types. And come time for the dedicated SAYHA volunteers to put ice back in - rest assured, they’ll be ready!

We look forward to bringing more hockey action and people to the great town of Spooner again next season, if not before with some special events!
