BARRON COUNTY — Jodi Kummet, who was appointed Barron County Sheriff in July 2025 by Governor Tony Evers, has announced she will run for election to the office. Kummet was appointed following the retirement of longtime Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald, who left law enforcement on June 1, 2025. She officially announced her candidacy on Friday.

Jodi Kummet, the current Barron County Sheriff, has officially announced her candidacy for election to the office of Barron County Sheriff. Kummet was appointed to the position following a vacancy and now seeks to continue serving the citizens of Barron County through the upcoming election.

Sheriff Kummet brings more than 30 years of law enforcement experience to the role, having previously served with the Wisconsin State Patrol, where she rose to the rank of Senior Master Trooper. Her career includes experience in criminal investigations, high-risk apprehensions, incident command, and interagency collaboration, including joint investigations with the FBI. She has also served as a field training officer and as evidence custodian for 20 counties.

A lifelong resident of the area, Kummet was born and raised in Cumberland, Wisconsin. She is the daughter of Jerry and Jane Elmberg of Cumberland and a graduate of Cumberland High School. She attended college at UW-River Falls, WITC, and CVTC. Throughout her career, she has completed ongoing professional training to remain current with best practices in modern law enforcement.

Law enforcement service is a family tradition for Sheriff Kummet. Her husband, Riley, and their two adult children also work in law enforcement, reinforcing her deep personal and professional commitment to public safety.

Sheriff Kummet’s community involvement includes more than 20 years of service with Special Olympics, participation on the Barron County Emergency Response Team, Shop with a Cop and long-standing engagement with local public safety initiatives. She has received multiple letters of recognition and appreciation for her work on high-profile cases in Barron County.

Kummet has earned broad support across the region, with endorsements from all police chiefs within Barron County, numerous current and former sheriffs from surrounding counties.

“My priority is building strong, respectful relationships between local police departments and partnering law enforcement agencies,” said Kummet. “By working together and maintaining open communication, we can better serve the citizens of Barron County and uphold the high standard of public service our community expects.” Kummet stated that she truly enjoys her job as Sheriff and takes pride in serving the community. She is fortunate to work alongside dedicated, hardworking employees, and values the teamwork they bring to the department.
