Joseph Jakubowski, 33, Janesville, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley to 14 years in federal prison. Jakubowski was convicted following a two-day trial in U.S. District Court in Madison in September of stealing firearms and silencers from a firearms dealer and with being a felon in possession of those firearms and silencers.
The evidence presented at trial showed that Jakubowski broke into Armageddon Supplies in Janesville on April 4, 2017, and stole 18 firearms and two silencers. As a felon, Jakubowski was prohibited from possessing firearms. Witnesses testified that blood found at the scene of the robbery was a DNA match to Jakubowski and that Jakubowski was in possession of six of the stolen firearms at the time of his arrest on April 14. In addition, Jakubowski admitted during interviews with law enforcement agents following his arrest and in his testimony at trial that he was the person who broke into Armageddon Supplies and stole the firearms and silencers.
The United States argued for a sentence within the advisory sentencing guideline range of 151 to 188 months, due to Jakubowski’s history of committing violent crimes and the seriousness of the crimes he committed which resulted in his indictment by a federal grand jury. Jakubowski has prior convictions for battery, domestic abuse, resisting an officer, and disarming an officer. Only a portion of the firearms he stole in April have been recovered, with 13 firearms, including a machinegun, and a silencer remaining in the community.
The court also ordered Jakubowski to pay $16,942 in restitution to the owner of Armageddon Supplies.
The agencies involved in the investigation include the Federal Bureau of Investigation; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Rock County Sheriff’s Department; Janesville Police Department; Beloit Police Department; U.S. Secret Service; Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation; and numerous other law enforcement agencies from Rock County and the surrounding area.
