SAWYER COUNTY -- A jury in Sawyer County has convicted a man of 1st Degree Child Sexual Assault.

Robert G. Johnson, age 41, of Rogers, MN has been convicted in Sawyer County Circuit Court of 1st Degree Child Sexual Assault - Sexual Contact with Person under Age of 13.

Charges were filed against Johnson in May 2016 after law enforcement investigated a report that he had sexually assaulted a 6 year old child (see previous story below).

Johnson has remained in custody since June 2016 on a $750,000 cash bail bond after he was arrested on a warrant regarding these criminal charges.

According to online circuit court records, a 4-day jury trial began on April 1, 2019. The jurors deliberated for less than 2 hours before returning with a Guilty Verdict.

Online circuit court records also indicate that Johnson’s defense attorney advised the Court that Johnson wished to enter a plea of NGI (not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect). The Court ordered that an evaluation of Johnson be conducted.

At the time of this post, the next court date for Johnson was not listed in online circuit court record.

A conviction for 1st Degree Child Sexual Assault - Sexual Contact with Person under Age of 13 carries a maximum penalty of 60 years confinement in state prison.

SAWYER COUNTY -- A Minnesota man is charged in Sawyer County Circuit Court with 1st Degree Sexual Assault of a Child Under the Age of 13.

A hearing was held on February 13, 2018 addressing the status of evidence regarding the felony charges filed against Robert G. Johnson, of Rogers, MN.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Sawyer County Circuit Court, Johnson was in Sawyer County in May 2016, visiting relatives. He stayed in the home of these relatives who have minor children. The following evening, after Johnson had left their residence, one of the children told the mother that Johnson had sexually assaulted the child during the night.

Sawyer County Sheriff’s Department was contacted by the father and a forensic interview was scheduled for the female child, who was 6 years old at the time.

The child described Johnson coming to her bed and touching and kissing her genitals, as well as forcing her to touch his genitals.

During interviews with the mother and father, they described that Johnson had behaved “very creepy” throughout his visit, “hitting on” the mother.

Sawyer County Law Enforcement contacted the Rogers Police Department in Minnesota who assisted in confirming Johnson’s contact information.

A criminal complaint and arrest warrant for Johnson were filed in Sawyer County Circuit Court on May 11, 2016, charging him with Class B Felony 1st Degree Sexual Assault of a Child Under the Age of 13.

If convicted as charged Johnson faces a maximum penalty of 60 years imprisonment.

Online circuit court records indicate that by June 1, 2016, Johnson was in custody and appeared via video for a hearing on his arrest warrant.

The Court placed Johnson on a $750,000 cash bail bond that same day. Online circuit court records indicate that Johnson has remained in custody throughout multiple hearings on his criminal charges over the course of 2017.

On February 1, 2018, a Notice of Intent to use DNA Evidence was filed in Sawyer County Circuit Court, according to online circuit court records.
