Jury Convicts Minong Man On Felony OWI Charge

A jury of 12 convicted Steven Stone, of Minong, WI, on a felony OWI charge in Washburn County Circuit Court on October 5th, 2016.

Charges of operating while under the influence of an intoxicant, 5th offense, were filed against Mr. Stone along with charges of operating a motor vehicle with a revoked driver's license and operating a motor vehicle with a prohibited blood alcohol concentration stemming from an incident that occurred on July 26th, 2014.

Mr. Stone's case initially went to a jury trial on January 22nd, 2015. A mistrial was declared on that day and the case was then sent to the Wisconsin Court of Appeals for review on August 21st, 2015. On June 21st, 2016 the Court of Appeals remanded the case back to Washburn County Circuit Court for any further litigation.

During the jury trial testimony was heard from Washburn County Sheriff's deputies and several other witnesses. Mr. Stone chose not to testify on his own behalf. Jury deliberations began around 3:30 in the afternoon and a verdict was returned just before 5:00 PM. Mr. Stone was found guilty on all three charges.

Mr. Stone was released on July 28th, 2014 subject to the conditions of a $1,000 signature bail bond and that bail remained in effect while his case was pending in court. His bail was revoked following the guilty verdict.

The Court found that this is Mr. Stone's 6th conviction for operating while intoxicated. A sentencing hearing for Mr. Stone is scheduled for November 28th, 2016. He faces a potential sentence of up to 6 years in prison, and/or $10,000 in fines.
