Jury Trial Scheduled for Shell Lake Man on Meth Charges

Jury Trial Scheduled for Shell Lake Man on Meth Charges

SHELL LAKE, Wis. -- A Shell Lake man facing charges of Possession of Methamphetamine has requested a jury trial which is now scheduled for January 2018.

According to the criminal complaint, in October 2016, Spooner Police Department requested that Shell Lake Police Department attempt to locate Dustin Klopp at his residence within the city of Shell Lake and place him under arrest for theft allegations from ShopKo where Klopp had previously been employed.

When Shell Lake Police Officers made contact with Klopp and told him he was being placed under arrest due to Spooner Police Department's request, he reportedly became very agitated and attempted to take off the coat he was wearing prior to being handcuffed. Officers then advised Klopp that he would be patted down for officer safety to determine if he had any weapons on his person. Klopp allegedly refused to obey the officer's commands at that point.

Ultimately Klopp was placed under arrest and was transported to the Washburn County Jail. Klopp then reportedly admitted to officers that he had methamphetamine concealed in his jacket and allegedly told the officers they would laugh when they saw it.

After Klopp had been transported to the Washburn County Jail, the substance was located in a pocket of Klopp's jacket and later tested positive for methamphetamine.

Law enforcement contacted Washburn County Health and Human Services regarding the children living in the home, ages 12 and 7 at the time, as Klopp was identified as the primary caregiver for those children whenever their mother was at work.

When the mother of the children was interviewed by law enforcement, she indicated that Klopp provides care for the children when she is at work and also stated that she thought Klopp was obtaining the tools and flashlights with his employee discount when he was still employed by ShopKo. The criminal complaint states that she also confirmed to officers that there were two firearms located within the home.

In November of 2016, charges of Misdemeanor Retail Theft were also filed against Klopp.

A jury trial was scheduled for late October of 2017 on Klopp's Felony charges for Possession of Methamphetamine, however, according to public record, the jury trial has now been moved to January 17, 2018, following a request for adjournment.

On October 28th Klopp was placed on a Signature Bond for $500.

Pursuant to the direction of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, as found in Supreme Court Rule 20:3.6, Trial Publicly, you are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
