(RELEASE) On 10/19 at 3:06 P.M. the Washburn County Sheriff's Office was notified of a pursuit by Barron County officers headed northbound on highway 53. Information indicated that two individuals in the vehicle were involved in a theft from Kohl's store in Rice Lake. The pursuit was discontinued at the Washburn County line, with the suspect vehicle still headed northbound.

At approximately 3:35 P.M. a Washburn County Deputy Sheriff observed the suspect vehicle eastbound on highway 70 in the Township of Stone Lake. The Washburn County Deputy activated the emergency lights and siren and the suspect vehicle fled. The suspect was driving at speeds of 80-90 miles per hour, headed toward the LCO community North of highway 70 in Sawyer County. LCO Tribal Police deployed "Stop Sticks" and deflated the drivers front tire. As the chase continued around a building complex, the suspect struck a Sawyer County Sheriff's Deputy head on. The driver identified as 24 year old Kenneth J. Quagon of Hayward, fled on foot. A juvenile female was taken into custody at the scene of the crash.

A search of several residences and a wooded area was conducted by Sawyer County SWAT, Washburn County SRT, LCO Tribal Police, along with Sawyer County, Washburn County, and Spooner Police K-9 units.Kenneth Quagon remains at large.

Our thoughts are with the Sawyer County Deputy who recieved minor injuries in the crash.

This is yet another example of the dangerous, lawless attitudes that law enforcement is currently experiencing. This type of selfish conduct puts our citizens and communities in harm's way. This young man put himself, his passenger, and all the officers involved at great risk of injury or death !

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Kenneth Quagon, is encouraged to contact The Sawyer or Washburn County Sheriff's Offices.

At approximately 3:30 pm, the chase that wound its way through Washburn County, ended just off County Road E near the St. Francis Solanus Indian Mission on Taylor Road.

After crashing into a squad car, a female was taken into custody while a male fled the vehicle into nearby woods. A manhunt for the suspect begin involving several departments, including a SWAT team with two armored vehicles.

It is unknown at-this-time if the suspect has been apprehended.

The Sawyer County deputy’s injuries are not known but witnesses at the scene described the officer as okay and out of his vehicle.

The suspect’s vehicle started on fire after the crash and Sawyer County ambulance and fire were both dispatched to the scene.

The Barron County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call of two people running from a store in Rice Lake and they were suspects in a theft from that store.

“A description of the car was given out and our deputy spotted the car on Hwy 53 between Rice Lake and Haugen,” Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said in an email to DrydenWire. “The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle and it failed to stop. A very short chase occurred and the vehicle pulled over and when the officer exited his squad car, the car took off very erratically, at which point we ended the chase”

The vehicle is believed to have then be spotted by Washburn County Deputies and again pursued the vehicle.
