  • For 2016, 66 officers have been killed due to criminal actions. In 2015, 41 were slain.
  • 17 officers were ambushed by entrapment or premeditation.
  • 12 were answering disturbance calls, 7 of those were domestic related.
  • 10 were investigating suspicious person calls or circumstances.
  • 6 were involved in tactical situations.
  • 5 were performing investigations.
  • 3 were involved in drug related investigations.
  • 3 were killed in unprovoked attacks.
  • 4 were performing traffic pursuits or stops.
  • 1 was answering a robbery call.
  • 1 was answering a burglary call.
  • 4 were attempting other arrests.
  • 62 of the 66 officer victims were killed by firearms, 34 handguns, 24 rifles, 1 shotgun and 3 firearms not reported. 4 officers were killed by suspects using vehicles
  • During the same time period, 2016, 53 officers have been accidentally killed.
  • 24 officers in motor vehicle accidents.
  • 13 were fatality struck by vehicles.
  • 10 in motorcycle accidents.
  • 2 officers drowned
  • 2 were accidentally shot.
  • 1 officer died in an airplane accident
  • 1 was thrown from a horse and killed.
