(3/1/17) - The Wisconsin Newspaper Association presented the Inter-County Leader with four awards at its 163rd-annual convention held this past weekend, Feb. 23-25, at the Madison Marriott West.
The awards were part of the 2016 Better Newspaper Contest, which drew 3,034 entries from 122 newspapers statewide. Entries were judged by members of the Illinois Press Association.
The Leader, competing in the highest circulation weekly division, received a second-place award for enterprise/interpretive reporting for the series, “Time for the community to take a stand,” by E. Royal Emerson. The series examined the community response to an epidemic of meth use locally. “Exceptional job at looking at all of the aspects of the meth problem in the county. Well-researched story on a disturbing topic,” noted one judge.
Leader sportswriter Marty Seeger received a second-place award in the local outdoor column and a third-place award for sports page or section.
Editor Gary King received an honorable mention, Editorial Award, based on three editorials published this past year.
The Leader’s sister paper, Washburn County Register, competing among weeklies in the 2,000 circulation or less division, earned five awards.
Photographer/reporter Larry Samson received a first-place award in the feature photo division with a photo of Spooner Rodeo entertainer Rider Kiesner. The Register also won a third-place award for general excellence, a third-place award for all-around newspaper photography and an honorable mention, Front Page Award. – with information from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association.
