Local Students Speak About Conservation

On January 21, students from Northstar Community Charter participated in a local Conservation Speaking Contest, hosted by the County Land and Water Conservation Department. Speeches promoted the conservation of natural resources and the protection and enhancement of environmental quality.

Judges ranked two divisions of students. The winners are as follows:

Elementary Divison (5-6 grade):

  • 1st - Sydney Walters “Spiny Water Flea”
  • 2nd - Hayden Balcisk “Curly Leaf Pondweed”
  • 3rd - Nicco Zampitella “Sturgeon”
  • 4th - Samuel Draper “Paddlefish”

Junior Division (7-8 grade):

  • 1st - Josie Lambie “Agricultural Practices”
  • 2nd - Ava Kildow “Quality Deer Management”
  • 3rd - Colton Eagle “CWD”
  • 4th - Lorenzo Zampitella “Canine Distemper Virus”

First place winners, Sydney and Josie, moved on to the North West WI Area where they competed with students from a different County. Both students took first place and will move on to the State contest in March during the State-Wide County Land and Water Conservation Conference, in Green Bay.
