BURNETT COUNTY — A reported domestic assault involving a firearm led to an hours-long response by multiple law enforcement agencies in Grantsburg Township before officers found a man dead inside the home, according to a press release from the Burnett County Sheriff's Office.

On July 29th, 2026, at approximately 9:38 a.m. Burnett County Dispatch received a call of a possible physical assault in Grantsburg Township. Burnett County Deputies met the reporting party, a 32-year-old female, at a different location. She reported a physical altercation between her and an acquaintance, a 26-year-old male. The female had obvious physical injuries, and she stated that the male had introduced a rifle into the altercation and reportedly fired two rounds in the home.
Burnett County Dispatch and Patrol Deputies were unable to contact the male via phone, and a perimeter was established. An Emergency Response Team (ERT) call out was made. Sawyer County, Washburn County, and Burnett County ERT responded and staged near the residence.
A ping of the male’s cell phone showed it was in the general area of the incident. Contact was attempted multiple times, including using drones and a robot. Gas was used as an attempt to extract the male without a violent confrontation. After nobody left the home, the home was physically cleared by law enforcement.
At approximately 9:00 p.m., a deceased dog was located inside the residence. The male was found a short time later in the house. The male was deceased, and it appeared to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Nobody else was located within the home.
Barron County Sheriff’s Office was requested to investigate this incident. The investigation is ongoing, and no names will be released at this time.
