Memorial Day 2018 Events for Washburn County

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2018 occurs on Monday, May 28. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades.

  • 10:00 am at Little Birch Lake North End, Dropping of the Wreath, 21 Volley Rifle Salute, Taps
  • 10:15 am March on Main Street Birchwood to the Veterans Memorial by Village Hall, Short Speech and Salute to Deceased Veterans.
  • 11:00 am at Woodlawn Cemetery, Rifle Salute, and Benediction Tribute to our fallen Comrades
  • 12:30 pm Luncheon at the American Legion Post #379 in Birchwood provided by the Auxiliary

  • 11:00 am at Greenwood Cemetery, Music provided by the Northwoods High School Band, Reading of Deceased Veterans, Placing of the Wreath, Rifle Salute, and Taps

SHELL LAKE

Monday 28th May 2018

American Legion Post #225 & Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9867 

  • 10:00 am Shell Lake Military Honors Team marches, starting at the Shell Lake Catholic Church on the West end of Main Street on down to the Shell Lake Memorial Park by the Beach.
  • 10:15 am Ceremony at Shell Lake Memorial Park, Music provided by the Shell Lake HS Band, Invocation, National Anthem, Missing Man Remembrance, Musical Selection, Guest Speaker, Reading of Deceased Veterans, Placing of the Wreath, Rifle Salute, Taps, Benediction

Right after the Ceremony move to the Shell Lake Cemetery for Full Military Honors provided by the Shell Lake Veterans Honor Guard
