Minong Man Sentenced for Possession of Methamphetamine

On November 1st, 2016, John P. Nelson of Minong, WI, was sentenced in Washburn County Circuit Court for Possession of Methamphetamine and Criminal Damage to Property. He was also sentenced on a charge of Battery in a second Washburn County Case. Nelson received 3 years probation, with the Court granting him a withheld sentence, subject to the supervision of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, Probation and Parole. For the conviction of Battery, Nelson received a sentence of 220 days in jail with credit for 166 days already served in county jail as well as eligibility for good time served. Public record indicates that the Court found Nelson's jail sentence to be complete as of November 1st.

Charges were filed against Nelson in January 2016, stemming from two separate incidents.

Documents filed with the Washburn County Circuit Court show that the first incident occurred on January 12th, 2016. The Washburn County Sheriff's Office responded to a complaint from a Washburn County resident, stating that their surveillance cameras were taken down and they had footage of the suspect. The investigation by deputies identified John Nelson as the suspect, and follow-up interviews revealed that Nelson also had committed battery against the mother of his child, leaving bruises on her face. Nelson admitted to deputies that he had taken the surveillance camera and that he had methamphetamine on his person.

Public record shows that Nelson was released by the Court on a cash bail bond the following day, January 13th, 2016, and then just two days later, on January 15th, 2016, the Washburn County Sheriff's Office was again dispatched to a Minong residence for another domestic abuse complaint. The victim again was the mother of Nelson's child, and she had further bruising and advised deputies that Nelson had slammed her head into a wall, leaving a lump on her head.

Nelson was not initially at the residence when deputies arrived on the 15th. He arrived a short time later and spoke with deputies, but then refused to cooperate with being placed under arrest. Nelson instead jumped back into his vehicle and sped away from the residence. Deputies searched for Nelson but were unable to locate him.

A warrant for Nelson's arrest was issued by the Court on January 22nd, 2016. Mr. Nelson appeared in Washburn County Circuit Court on May 20th, 2016 and the warrant was cancelled. Mr. Nelson remained in the custody of the Washburn County Sheriff's Office from that date until the present.

On August 30th, 2016 Nelson plead guilty to the charges of Felony Possession of Methamphetamine, Misdemeanor Battery and Misdemeanor Criminal Damage to Property, with an additional charge of Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and two charges of bail bond violations against Nelson being dismissed but read in for the Court to consider in determining Nelson's sentence.

Nelson is ordered to attend classes on anger management and domestic violence, pay statutory court costs, and is subject to a curfew and other conditions to be enforced by the WI DOC. Nelson is also to pay restitution for the Criminal Damage to Property conviction.

According to public record, Nelson also has possible pending court matters in the State of Minnesota with possible warrants and or sentencing orders active there. Nelson is to address those issues directly with Minnesota.
