On Friday June 2, 2017 at 1833hrs, Polk County Dispatch received a report of a two vehicle traffic accident on State Hwy 65 at the intersection with County Hwy F/85th Ave in Garfield Township.  There were reports of two seriously injured occupants who were trapped in one of the involved vehicles.

EMS and Law Enforcement personnel were dispatched and upon arrival at the scene, they immediately determined that the two injured subjects would need med flights via Life Link III helicopters to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN.  State Hwy 65 was shut down at the scene and once extricated from the vehicle, the injured subjects were flown out by two helicopters.

Investigation of the incident indicated that a Ford F150 pickup truck was traveling northbound on St. Hwy 65, towing two ATV’s on a trailer.  This vehicle was occupied by three subjects who were uninjured.  The other vehicle, a Toyota Prius, was traveling westbound on County Hwy F/85th Ave and entered the intersection without yielding to oncoming traffic.  The driver of the pickup was unable to avoid a collision with the Toyota, and struck the driver’s side of that vehicle. Both vehicles came to rest in the northwest ditch of the intersection.  The driver of the Toyota suffered life-threatening injuries and the passenger suffered significant injuries.  All parties appeared to have been wearing seatbelts and airbags deployed in both vehicles.  Alcohol was not a factor with the driver of the pickup truck; it is unknown at this time if alcohol was involved with the driver of the Toyota.  Further investigation may be conducted by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency services assisting with this incident included Garfield First Responders and Fire, Amery Area Ambulances, Life Link III, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
